Who was the 1st person to believe in your writing? I've been telling epic stories since I could dress my Barbies, so I don't remember. What really made a difference was when I finally believed in myself. That was in 2022, and I've published 4 books since then. #indieauthors #writingcommunity

As a fantasy author, I’ve done this more times than I can count. But l’ve also learned to add notes in brackets and use the yellow highlighter to remind me to do this research later—after I’ve finished my first draft. ♥️ #writingcommunity #indieauthors

What’s a legit alt to Facebook groups? I share writing prompts, book recs, grammar tips, how tos, and other resources. I also host group writing sprints. But thanks to the algo, my group rarely sees my posts now. I’m starting a live series tomorrow, but no one knows. #writingcommunity #indieauthors

Yes! I can’t wait for the Bride sequel. 😍 I confess, I haven’t gotten past chapter 2 in Quicksilver. I have to finish for my book club meeting, but I’m also hosting JaNoWriMo in my group, so every spare moment is going to hitting that 50K goal. 😅

Oh good. I’m glad you have someone to work with. And I hear you about the self-funding. I’m in the same boat on the author side of the biz. Pacing and plot holes are so much fun!!! (I mean fixing them. 🤣) It’s like looking at a puzzle and making sure all the pieces line up. ^_^

Three chapters away? Wow. Congrats! I remember that feeling. I’m 25 chapters away now. 😅 Do you have an editor lined up? (It’s okay if it’s not me. lol.) Just want to make sure you’re in good hands. Let me know if you have any questions, like what’s the difference between dev and line edits. ☺️

“My family hated my 1st chapter.” Are they your ideal reader? Do they LOVE your genre? Do they understand 1st drafts are for telling & experimenting & capturing ideas for you to revise later? No? They’re not the people to give you quality feedback. #indieauthors #writingcommunity #writing

Is your wife your ideal reader? Is she passionate about your genre? Was she reading only the first draft, which is mostly telling and exploring your ideas to capture them on the page for editing later?

That was my problem for almost 20 years, and when I finally gave myself permission to write crap and have fun and think of my first draft as a playground, the words flew onto the page. I’ve published 3 books now, and they’re definitely not crap. ^_^

That’s awesome!!! I’m an indie author. I write fantasy romance / romantasy. How about you? Also, you can do this, whether you choose the trad or indie route. You can set yourself up for success. ♥️

4. Make that first draft fun. Think of it as your playground, like you’re talking to your best friend. Give yourself permission to tell instead of show so you capture the essence of the scenes or the big idea you’re trying to grasp and convey.

3. Remember first drafts aren’t supposed to be perfect prose. The only expectation / goal / win when a first draft is finishing it. ♥️

2. Dig deeper into your characters. What do they desire most, what do they actually need, and what festering wounds are they carrying around?

Erin P.T. Canning, Editor + Coach @eptcanningeditor.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
When I feel this what, I have a few go-tos to turn this around: 1. Go back to you big why: why this story, these characters, this message? What excited you about this WIP?

I’m hosting JaNoWriMo in my FB group. I’m now at 5K words for book 4. Next week will be the real test tho. I’m aiming for 11,500 words. That’s not too hard, but I’m also hosting my free live series, Make Writing Easier. And I have other projects lined up this month. Whew. #indieauthors #writing

I started my first draft 1/1, and I already hate chapter 1. Am I rewriting it today? No! Because first drafts are always awkward and uncomfortable. The only win with a first draft is FINISHING it. So I’m writing chapter 2 today. I’m excited to keep going, and I trust the process. #indieauthors

If I had to recommend 3 things to writers (at all levels), I would start with these 3 (with options for adding more): 1. Be persistent. 2. Be curious about the world, people, history, everything. Expand your horizons. Curiosity is your soil, your ocean, your rock, your air. 3. Never stop learning.

Yes!!! Do that, placing there where you think they go. Do um you write in Word? I use style tags to make navigating my doc easy, and that how I organize my scenes.

If you know Z, then think about what they need to collect along the way to win Z. The steps in between are the MC acquiring the knowledge, skills, tools, and/or people they need to win Z. Like, Dorothy needed brains, heart, and courage to defeat the witch. Does that help?

I get this. I know major scenes I want, and I attempt to line them up in chronological order. Then I have fun exploring how they get to those waypoints.

That was always my understanding, but I won’t force that on others. For me, I never called myself an author until I published, and reaching that milestone was a life-long dream that I still cherish.

Huh. I’ve not heard this one before. I strongly dislike aspiring writer; if you write, you’re a writer. Period. But aspiring author makes sense to me: it’s someone who wants to publish but hasn’t yet and they’re working toward that goal.

Why do editors hate passive voice so much? Because it literally means your characters aren’t taking action; they’re letting stuff happen to them or around them. That gets boring quickly. Who wants to read about a character sitting on their butt, doing nothing? #writingtips #writingcommunity #wip

Hey, you’re still setting a goal! When my kiddos were little, I did a lot of writing on my phone app, and then I’d transfer finished scenes into my main document.
