I started my first draft 1/1, and I already hate chapter 1. Am I rewriting it today? No! Because first drafts are always awkward and uncomfortable. The only win with a first draft is FINISHING it. So I’m writing chapter 2 today. I’m excited to keep going, and I trust the process. #indieauthors

If I had to recommend 3 things to writers (at all levels), I would start with these 3 (with options for adding more): 1. Be persistent. 2. Be curious about the world, people, history, everything. Expand your horizons. Curiosity is your soil, your ocean, your rock, your air. 3. Never stop learning.

Why do editors hate passive voice so much? Because it literally means your characters aren’t taking action; they’re letting stuff happen to them or around them. That gets boring quickly. Who wants to read about a character sitting on their butt, doing nothing? #writingtips #writingcommunity #wip

my best tip (and I tell my students this) is do whatever the fuck you want, but do it consciously and purposefully. my second best writing tip is to be wary of writing tips. some are truly helpful, or will at least engage you in thought about your process. but don't let 'em get in your head.
