Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 11hI don't tell them about power posing before, though some students may have heard about it (they are in their 2nd week of psychology undergrad at this point, many had psychology A-levels). Bad experimental design is part of the plan, but every year I am surprised again how big the effects are. 000
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 11hIt's a very simple, badly controlled experiment: I ask one half of the room to imitate a power pose, the other half to imitate a sitting position. Then everyone rates on a scale of 1-10 how powerful they felt (not at all - extremely). 210
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Every year, I conduct a "power pose" experiment in-class and the effects are absolutely humongous! I'm already looking forward to the lecture on experimental design, where we get to debunk our own study and talk about demand characteristics! #stats #EduSky 170

We found that emotion regulation and attachment did not act as MoC, but that they were preceeded by change in depression. Thanks a lot to T. Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I've seen people adding a SoundCloud link to help others pronounce their name. I personally don't care about the right pronunciation of my name, but I care about the spelling. Should I add: My name has a G and a K, and I like it that way, thanks? 021
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I've worked with international colleagues before and I've literally never had issues. Is this a cultural thing? Is this not considered a faux-pas? Is it just work pressure? I don't want to complain, just never know if I should find it amusing or insulting (and how to respond?) 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I've always thought my name was easy to spell/pronounce but suddenly in the UK people keep misspelling it, sometimes several times in one e-mail chain, and I'm a bit bemused by it ... Cheers, Angelika. Hi Anjelika,... ... Thanks, Angelika. Hi Angelina,... ... Best, Angelika. Hi Angelica,... 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 24/09/2026This is great! I intend to borrow a journal volume from the library to show to my students for a lecture on academic writing this year to illustrate volumes and issues. Feels like a similar issue where the association to the physical object got lost over time. 030
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 19/09/2026*rage bait for any German-speakers brought to you by an Austrian? 000
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 25/08/2026UK is actually not so far off NL if you want to be able to hire international PhD students (not just home students). And post-docs are much more expensive around here (150k per year or so) 010
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 11/08/2026I think the OSF project infrastructure contributed more than anything else to increasing transparency in psychology research and we'll have to fight to keep up the same standards! 031
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Big (and sad) news indeed... I've been using the OSF since I was in undergrad and can't even picture what research life will be without OSF projects. 120
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Tbf they are often egregious for other reasons, too 010
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 06/08/2026I don't think this is good citation practice even according to APA Style. You should only cite the whole book when you refer to it as a whole, e.g., "Several pop science books have discussed this issue (Book A, Book B, Book C)". 120

Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 05/08/2026Journal: Please submit registered reports! Yay, #openscience! Also journal: We just accepted your Stage 2 RR, but could you please shove these pesky design analyses from Stage 1 into an appendix? Your manuscript is really too long 🤡 Am I the only one who finds this weird? 070
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Not sure if I told you but my partner is Australian and we used to live in Munich, so I've got a bit of experience bridging the cultural differences 😉 130

Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 03/07/2026OMG, Beth, this is wonderful news!!!! 🥳🥳🥳 Congratulations!! From a selfish perspective, I'm extremely happy that you'll be in Europe long-term! 130
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 21/06/2026Ugh, this book is constantly being promoted by our University library's leisure reading section (together with other questionable self-help books)... I always find this so frustrating bc there are literally experts around the corner who could suggest something more evidence-based 😒 071
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 18/06/2026Anyways, as you can see I'm super enthusiastic about this project 😄 If anyone works on similar things and wants to connect, please feel free to reach out! 010
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 18/06/2026The true strength of this project comes from our close collaboration with West Yorkshire Police and Chief Inspector Alan Rhees-Cooper who doesn't only have 20 years of experience in the Missing Person sphere, but is also secretly a philosopher of science by training. 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 18/06/2026But we won't just stop at calculating probabilities: Thanks to my colleague Chloe Brennan (not on Bluesky), we'll also be investigating how police and parents evaluate risks in missing children incidents. What risks should be classified as high or low? Would they trust data-driven risk assessments? 100
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 18/06/2026Like any methodologist, I love a good paradox, so you may be interested to hear that this whole project came into being because the police correctly recognized that a prevention paradox had biased existing risk assessment methods. This will be our best effort to overcome this bias 🤞🏼 100
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 18/06/2026We'll be developing a Bayesian risk assessment model that helps police officers make better, evidence-based decisions in missing children incidents. What is Bayesian about it? We'll assign data-driven probabilities to investigative hypotheses (e.g., a child is with friends / an exploiter) 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 18/06/2026Had a fabulous day in London presenting our project with West Yorkshire Police at the Police STAR Fund event! This is my first funded project as a PI and I am absolutely enthusiastic to work on this for the next year with a fantastic team 😎 @livunipsyc.bsky.social 131
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 17/06/2026I still often use a thesaurus for writing when I feel like I'm in need for a better expression, but I think that's more of a personal quirk (I do the same in my native language). Also, I found moving to Liverpool really humbling - the Scouse accent absolutely killed me for the first few months 😂 010
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 17/06/2026I was pretty fluent by the end of high school (after ~8 years of learning), to the point that I wouldn't make many grammatical mistakes anymore. Learned a lot more nuances during my PhD, both through writing and talking to native speakers. 100

Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Schöne Karte! Hab meinen Heimatort gefunden 😊 Dabei auch einen kleinen Fehler in den Daten entdeckt: Ammersee ist ein See, keine Gemeinde mit 1 Einwohner 😉 100
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Good news, due to data collected over the Easter break, we can conclude: He has significantly risen, p < .05! 010
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 05/03/2026Are your DMs open? It wasn't my own course design so I don't want to divulge too much, and it's really quite specific 😅 100
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 05/03/2026I've taught on a course like this but tbh wouldn't recommend this approach. Students end up lacking the basic stats literacy skills to read the literature which is mainly based around interpreting p-values, and other faculty struggle to supervise them for BSc/MSc theses. 270

Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 23/02/2026This is so cool and looks amazing! 🤩 Will you have a blog post explaining why the Cauchy is particularly useful? (I guess it has something to do with the tails?) 120
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 17/02/2026Tbh that probably doesn't even deserve the term "questionable" research practice anymore 🙈 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 17/02/2026I think the only way preregistration could solve the issue would be if all analyses and data cleaning steps were fixed in code, but then again, when can we ever perfectly predict all the crazy things people do? 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 17/02/2026I'm with you on this one! I've been very disillusioned about this since writing the paper about p-hacking with Felix. Those who hack will find a way... 110
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 13/02/2026Yes, I think (or better, hope!) so! However, once you've activated link sharing, I think the link will keep working, so it's safest to copy everything over to a new document! 120
Angelika Stefan @ephemeralidea.bsky.social · 13/02/2026We had a similar problem where suddenly snarky comments appeared from the nowhere in a Google doc with link sharing activated (link only being shared with 2 people). Had to migrate the doc, couldn't figure out who it was, best explanation random hacker. Treat Google docs as open to everyone. 120
