Keir Starmer orders UK economic reset amid Donald Trump’s tariff mayhem
PM ready to ditch ‘old assumptions’ and is debating possible changes to fiscal rules to boost growth Keir Starmer is preparing to rethink key elements of the government’s economic policy in an emergency response to Donald Trump’s tariff blitz, amid growing concern in Downing Street that the US president’s trade war could do lasting damage to the UK. The prime minister believes, say allies, that “old assumptions should be discarded” in the UK’s response, suggesting he and the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, may be preparing to raise taxes again – despite having promised not to do so – or even possibly change their “iron clad” fiscal rules to allow more borrowing and fire up economic growth at home in the event of recession. ‘What was their crime?’ Families tell of shock over IDF killing of Gaza paramedics
Relatives who waited agonising week before bodies were found speak of passion that drove Red Crescent workers • Our aid workers were brutally killed and thrown into a mass grave in Gaza. This must never happen again Gaza is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a civilian now that Israeli forces have resumed their military campaign with even more ferocity, but for the first responders who rush towards the wreckage of bombed buildings, the risks are multiplied many times over. The 15 paramedics and rescue workers whose bodies were found last weekend in a bulldozed pit outside Rafah knew they were putting their lives in peril to try to save others, but they could not have been prepared for what awaited them in the early hours of 23 March. The Trump admin claims it has "no independent authority" to secure Abrego Garcia's return to the US any more than does to end the Russia–Ukraine war or return hostages from Gaza. But Abrego Garcia is imprisoned in El Salvador at the US's direction and expense.
The Order Is Indefensible on the Merits.
The district court's order-a command to "facilitate and effectuate"
Abrego Garcia's return from a foreign country by midnight on Monday-is
unlawful. There is no likelihood that it would survive review on appeal.
1. The order below is neither possible nor proper. As noted, Abrego
Garcia is an El Salvadoran national, being held in El Salvador, at the hands of the El Salvadoran government. Or as the Plaintiffs themselves put it, Abrego Garcia is in the custody of a foreign sovereign over whom America "has no jurisdiction." Emergency TRO Mot. I 4; see also Renewed TRO Mot.
I 3. Because the United States has no control over Abrego Garcia, however,
Defendants have no independent authority to "effectuate" his return to the
United States - any more than they would have the power to follow a court order commanding them to "effectuate" the end of the war in Ukraine, or a
return of the hostages from Gaza.
