Hang on, hang on, let me guess.... You don't get groceries, and you are slowly starving to death?

A) Yes you can. B) But anyway, nobody is saying that you have to. C) It is perfectly possible to own a car and also do most of your journeys NOT by car (and/or want to reduce how many journeys you drive). D) What do the many people who don't have a car do? So fed up with this ridiculous argument.

As someone who goes to a lot of metal gigs with my teenage son, I can honestly say that metalheads are a lovely, lovely bunch.

My Instagram feed is full of AI generated videos of indignant tradesman riding bikes stacked up with building materials etc. Apparently someone has said something about replacing vans with cargo bikes and they are all very butthurt. And obviously haven't seen what cargo bikes can do! 😂

I mean, the fact that there exists such a thing as a "school pick up line" makes me despair for the human race...!

Firstly, fuel in the UK, where I am, costs roughly double what it costs in the US, where I presume you are from. Secondly, I'm not talking about a minute. I'm talking about people waiting to pick their kids up, sitting there for 20 mins or more.

Engineer Like A Girl @engineerlikeagirl.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'll believe that fuel is too expensive when I don't routinely see people parked up in their cars with the engine running.

Truly terrible to be able to walk less than 15 minutes for this. If only I had to drive here...

A bit of litter picking with my local community gardening group and we stopped to admire this little bed which one of us planted up a while back and has finally bloomed after such a hot summer! 🙂

That's a balance that the designers have to strike. If you put the crossing too far off the desire line the danger is that peds will not use it. In this case, the junction has been tightened right up which will force drivers to navigate the junction at much lower speeds than previously.

True, but it's the one I go to! Used to be ok, but these days it is consistently quite bad.

Off topic, but Lidl fruit and veg really is shit. I mostly buy my f&v from elsewhere these days, for this reason, but I picked up this avocado when I was in there yesterday. Cheers guys! Breakfast is ruined 🤢

Zebra Croydon?! That's a new one! 🤪 The crossing is almost perfectly on the desire line, which is to say that the majority of people want to walk/cycle from one side road to the one opposite. Putting the crossing as close as possible to the junction means they don't need to deviate too far.

Whilst I've been in Manchester this week, a project I'm very excited about has kicked off; I went to have a look at it today. It's tightening up of this junction (look closely and you can see the old and new kerb lines) plus a parallel zebra linking across to the road opposite (behind the post box)
A highway construction site at a T junction. There are lots of orange plastic barriers around the site. The original kerb line on one side of the junction is still visible, and the new kerbs have been set out in position . The distance pedestrians will have to cross the side road is going to be much shorter, and vehicles will have to slow down to make the turn. Opposite the side road, on the other side of the main road, is a road which has an historic modal filter. This is going to be opened up to allow cycles through, and a parallel zebra will enable people to cross the main road safely.

Yes it does seem to be a bit random. Prior to my current kettle I had a more expensive one which lasted less than 2 years... 🙄

Engineer Like A Girl @engineerlikeagirl.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
No help to you whatsoever but my kettle cost about a tenner from Woolworths about 15+ years ago! And I drink a LOT of tea so it must have been used thousands and thousands of times. I miss Woolies 🥹

Terrible policy when domestic transport is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases in the UK. We need to be going all-in on helping people AWAY from reliance on fossil fuels, not subsidising their use even more than we already do.

Hard to work out from this article but this was a 84 year old (fit and healthy) pedestrian who was hit and killed by a car driver. (He happened to be a former president of the Chartered Institute of Housing as well as a much loved member of the local community)

It had car wash stuff in it previously, I gave it a rinse out with my pressure washer. I figure once any residue in there has been diluted with 1000 litres of water it will be fine to water the garden with.

You really don't have to look very hard, for very long, or go back very far, to tot up quite the list of innocent pedestrians killed by motor vehicle drivers...

As someone who lives in a very touristy area of England, I welcome a small visitor tax (we're talking a few £ per person). High visitor numbers put a huge strain on local resources - policing, waste, traffic management, lifeguarding etc - and this will help councils cope with these additional costs.
