Great to see so many lads turn up to football training on their bikes. Lots of the younger ones cycled with parents, too, or in/on cargo bikes. I guess having great infrastructure to get there helps...! 😍

Current POV. Sitting on Poole Quay having a cuppa and enjoying the peaceful autumn morning. No traffic noise as the Quay is closed to motor traffic from 1 March to end Oct each year. Just a bit of jazz music, boat noise and the sound of people talking 😊

Truly terrible to be able to walk less than 15 minutes for this. If only I had to drive here...

A bit of litter picking with my local community gardening group and we stopped to admire this little bed which one of us planted up a while back and has finally bloomed after such a hot summer! 🙂

Off topic, but Lidl fruit and veg really is shit. I mostly buy my f&v from elsewhere these days, for this reason, but I picked up this avocado when I was in there yesterday. Cheers guys! Breakfast is ruined 🤢

Whilst I've been in Manchester this week, a project I'm very excited about has kicked off; I went to have a look at it today. It's tightening up of this junction (look closely and you can see the old and new kerb lines) plus a parallel zebra linking across to the road opposite (behind the post box)
A highway construction site at a T junction. There are lots of orange plastic barriers around the site. The original kerb line on one side of the junction is still visible, and the new kerbs have been set out in position . The distance pedestrians will have to cross the side road is going to be much shorter, and vehicles will have to slow down to make the turn. Opposite the side road, on the other side of the main road, is a road which has an historic modal filter. This is going to be opened up to allow cycles through, and a parallel zebra will enable people to cross the main road safely.

Back in Blighty, and now back home in Dorset, very tired but happy after a fun few days away with my boys. I really recommend a trip to Ghent to anyone, it's such a nice city in itself and so well connected to other places too. Lovely architecture, pleasant streets, waffles, beer and chocolate! 😁

Saw the impressive cycle parking under Gent-St-Pieters station this evening too, it's huge! I took this photo at gone 11:30pm so I presume that many of these bikes "live" here for commuters into Ghent to use for their onward journey to work from the station.

Today we caught a train to Oostkamp, near Bruges, to go to a music (metal) festival, at my 14-year old's request. Great fun but I am knackered after 8+ hours on my feet plus walking at either end. I was a bit worried about the journey home late at night with two kids, but all went fine 👍

Got the train to nearby Lokeren this evening to watch the local football team play Eupen. Cool water feature and bunny sculptures in the pretty town centre. Less impressed by this frankly terrifying pedestrian crossing over a very busy and wide road...!
A large water feature which looks like crazy paving - lots of angular shaped slabs which have water running between them.A very bland, four lane road with cycle lanes either side of it. A basic zebra crossing crosses all the lanes in one go. There are no belisha beacons like we'd have in the UK to make the crossing more visible to drivers. In fact, in the UK this would almost certainly be a signalised crossing.Large modernistic stainless steel rabbit sculptures, three of them, in a paved public open space. On the side of the building there is a mural depicting a rabbit apparently falling from the sky. Or it may be a hare. Perhaps the sculptures are supposed to be hares too, I don't know.

We haven't hired bikes here - everything is very walkable for the few days we're here. Plus I'd be nervous about my kids cycling here - very busy with peds, not much motor traffic but also not much dedicated cycling infrastructure. Cobbled streets,& the thing I'd be most worried about - tram tracks!
A row of cyclists follow closely behind a city tram in Ghent. Theyre taking advantage of the clear path that the tram creates between the many meandering pedestrians (tourists!)

There are many, many cargo bikes here, including lots of brands/models that I've never seen at home. E-bikes also very popular - and it never fails to astound me how people leave them locked only to themselves, out on the street. At home they'd be stolen in 5 mins!
City intersection with no motor traffic visible, but two cargo bikes are being ridden past.

Final photo for this evening - this amused me 😊 The challenges of moving house when you have large pieces of furniture and when the apartments are very old with narrow staircases and no elevators!

So much fantastic architecture, which we enjoyed looking at as we wandered the streets all afternoon (despite persistent rain, which was a novelty given two months at home without it!) Lots of bridges, and so many lovely bikes everywhere! 🤩 Street maintenance an issue here, however, as at home.
A photo looking along a canal from a bridge with an ornate metal parapet. Old, tall buildings front the water. A traditional style electric bike is parked next to the parapet - it's turquoise with a bench seat on the back and a metal rack on the front.A pavement which should be entirely of stone slabs, but has obviously been dug up at some point and the repair has been made, badly, in asphalt. It's very uneven and looks pretty rubbish.

Fewer cars in the city centre means less car parking is needed. Cafe tables and bike parking takes its place. Where people have driven, there are several underground public car parks. The one nearest us costs €40 per 24 hours... That's how you discourage driving!
A typical Ghent street. There are tram tracks, restaurant tables and chairs in what could have been on street car parking spaces, and a large toast rack of bike parking.

There are lots of traffic free streets, but many that are restricted in other ways, for example one way for general traffic, with cycles, buses and taxis allowed in both directions. A good way of making driving more difficult without preventing access by car impossible.
A photo of a street with a large church in the background. The road is marked out such that general traffic goes in one direction, shown with arrows. A white line down the middle of the road separates traffic from movement in the opposite direction, which is clearly marked as bus, taxi, cycles and mopeds.

I didn't tell my children this before we came, as the eye-rolling would have been too much to bear, but I've been dying to visit Ghent to see the results of their traffic circulation plan - an intervention banning through traffic from their city centre - introduced in a single night in 2017.

Eventually made it to Gent-St-Pieters, found a tram (easier said than done as loads of roadworks outside the station), miraculously got off at the correct stop, then walked in the wrong direction for a bit...and at last found our home for the week 😊 A little evening mooch and it's all rather lovely.
