That first chapter is such a standout! I liked the whole book, but I liked some of the parts better than the whole.

Are those not the same cover artist? Mind you, I didn't look, I just assumed.

it is a travesty that the brilliant Indrapramit Das is not more widely known in fantasy and horror fandom. The way Indra pulled South Asian history, politics, monstrosity, and queer love together in one book is a thing to behold

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

nothing can go wrong if we tell the cataloger to teach a library instruction session for a comparative literature seminar on the Brothers Grimm, they said
A slide deck for a one-shot on the Brothers Grimm titled "My Mother, She Killed Me; My Father, He Ate Me; The Librarian Was Helpful, Though."

Oof is right, but also, I still highly recommend it! It's a graphic book but not gratuitious. Difficult to read, but worth it. Very much about identity and agency and what it means to be human.

Oh, agreed. Self-skinning better than externally-imposed skinning, maybe. The skinning in The Devourers is 2ndary to the thoroughly described eating of humans (by shapeshifters, whose (in)humanity is explored in the book). And there is a SA that happens on the page & heavily referenced throughout.

Don't get me wrong, I would still wholeheartedly recommend them both, but I know I have reader friends who would choose to decline to read either. Me, on the other hand: now reading nonfiction about a woman who survived a bear attack 😅

The thing about the flaying in The Devourers is that it's less disturbing than many other things that happen in the book. And Keith Rosson writes horror (& truly spectacular flawed human beings). I like going into books without much context, but content warnings might be warranted for both of these.

This weekend I finished The Devourers (Indra Das) and started and finished Crone (Keith Rosson). Both excellent, both very heavy. Now reading In the Eye of the Wild (Nastassja Martin), non-fiction, recced by someone on here. I'm going to need some lighthearted fluff after this!

Started (and finished) Crone this weekend and loved every minute of it.

I'll decide when I have time to engage. I don't want stuff shoved under my eyeballs, even stuff I've actively chosen to engage with before.

I'm middle-aged and cranky and probably not the target user for a lot of demographics, but if given the choice between a website and an app, or a website and a newsletter, I am *always* going to choose the website. To me it's the difference between opt-in and opt-out.

I knew nothing about all of these deeply upsetting people before a few weeks ago, and now literally every quote I read from one of them is a new low bar that has my skin trying to crawl off my body.

There were more men in a single documented gang rape at one school than the number of competitive trans athletes nationally. But I’ve heard a lot more politicians being asked about protecting girls from one of these scenarios and not another… I’ll let you guess which is which.

Oh, I loved it! Have you read the author's 2nd book? It's only available in Spanish from my library, but I liked Devourers enough to want to track down Das's whole catalog.

Also, for 🐾 and 👹 readers, I've now read four!! books this year that prominently featured flaying, which is a reading trend I'd never had reason to track before (the 4th is The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, by Stephen Graham Jones, *also* great. Crone is squelchy, but there's no skinning)

Finished this weekend: The Devourers, by Indra Das, and Crone, by Keith Rosson. Both excellent, both beautifully written and guaranteed to linger. I can't recommend them both highly enough. (not necessarily back to back, though. They're also both bruising. Ow.)

Hat tip to @emexastris.bsky.social for pointing this out, but if you notice, the two people whose knowledge Huang appeals to are, y'know, 1) people and 2) of course women. One is his wife (Lori = Lori Huang) and the other ('Janine') is, I think, Janine Paul who I *think* is his personal assistant?

HiRISE images are great for that! There's a lot on Mars that's very alien, but at high resolution, so much is familiar, too.

I am not first and will be far from the last to say this: I have purchased so many books because I saw them recommended or publicized here on bsky. I cannot urge you all enough to KEEP TALKING ABOUT BOOKS. I know it's easier to talk up someone else's book, but this also means you, the shy author.
