it is a travesty that the brilliant Indrapramit Das is not more widely known in fantasy and horror fandom. The way Indra pulled South Asian history, politics, monstrosity, and queer love together in one book is a thing to behold

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

There were more men in a single documented gang rape at one school than the number of competitive trans athletes nationally. But I’ve heard a lot more politicians being asked about protecting girls from one of these scenarios and not another… I’ll let you guess which is which.

Finished this weekend: The Devourers, by Indra Das, and Crone, by Keith Rosson. Both excellent, both beautifully written and guaranteed to linger. I can't recommend them both highly enough. (not necessarily back to back, though. They're also both bruising. Ow.)

Hat tip to @emexastris.bsky.social for pointing this out, but if you notice, the two people whose knowledge Huang appeals to are, y'know, 1) people and 2) of course women. One is his wife (Lori = Lori Huang) and the other ('Janine') is, I think, Janine Paul who I *think* is his personal assistant?

At last count, I've bought, gotten my library to buy, or checked out a few dozen books as a result of bsky recommendations, and I only joined a year ago. Talk about your books! Talk about others' books! Talk about your favorite book!

I am not first and will be far from the last to say this: I have purchased so many books because I saw them recommended or publicized here on bsky. I cannot urge you all enough to KEEP TALKING ABOUT BOOKS. I know it's easier to talk up someone else's book, but this also means you, the shy author.

It all matters! In the hands of someone really capable, I've eaten and enjoyed shellfish! And yes, in fact, there is such a thing as bad pizza. Same with books: I've got things that are definite me-bait, but the person writing them still has to be good at it.

This article from ACCESSORIES magazine about my dad's going-out-of-business wholesale #vintage #jewelry warehouse CJSsales.com in NYC is 25 years old, new address is 390 Fifth Ave, 4th Floor, but phone/website still good, my sister still works with him & there is still so much merchandise left!
BAUBLES, BANGLES & BEADS:
CJS SALES, A DESIGNER'S KISMET

All those baucles, bangles, bright, shiny beads, sparkles, spangles," that make designers' hearts sing out likely come from one of New York's best-kept secrets, CJS Sales.

Nestled in a 5,000-square-foot warehouse, situated in the accessories and trim district, CJS boast a dizzying array of beads, findings and crystals. In fact, owners Carl Schimel and his daughter, Elyse, take pride in being the starting point for future fashion.

And what a starting point it is: one of the world's largest collections of vintage closeout beads, crafts, and jewelry findings, including rhinestones, Venetian and pressed glass cabochons and stones, filigree, plastic beads, Bakelite, chains, nail heads, Lucite, Swarovski crystals, cameos, seed beads, pearls, buckles, even antique chandelier parts. In short, a veritable gold mine for jewelry, accessories, apparel and even interior designers looking for that something special material to differentiate their designs.

Their treasure trove comes from decades of collecting, buying inventory from closing factories and other sources from around the world. So it's no wonder that designers fly in to peruse their stock. Even Native American artists call in special orders since CJS offers the last vestiges for the rare and unusual outside of museums.

A look into the canyons of 12-foot plus high stacks of boxes that contain CJS' inventory is an immediate signal that CJS is no place for amateurs. "Our clients come in with a vision, we hand them a tray and dig in, sometimes staying for hours," Elyse says.

So it's no wonder the Schimels put this admonition on their website about the firm: "It's a warehouse and unless you know what you are looking at it can be very overwhelming–but if you an experienced buyer–and willing to dig and get dirty you will be in heaven!"

When it comes to signing open letters about academic freedom, “We have to take a principled stand!” doesn’t work if there have been loads of other much more obvious and serious instances of violations of academic freedom to which you said absolutely nothing.
