In the autumn of 1883, a national paper reported that "an Iowa woman has spent seven years embroidering the solar system on a quilt." Ellen Harding Baker used her stunning quilt to teach astronomy in an era when women could not attend college www.themarginalian.org/2018/12/06/e...

#SundaysAreForSpinning : I hadn’t worked on this in a couple weeks, but I finally finished the singles today. I plan on chain-plying it. #Handspinning 🧶
A 3D printed bobbin from electric spinning wheel with spun singles. Mostly orange and yellow, with a bit of purple peeking through from a lower layer. The fiber was from the Fossil Fibers Cephalopoda mystery braid club. This colorway was “Blanket Octopus” on 80/20 Rambouillet/silk.

Overheard in the locker room of my kid’s swimming school. Mom: “Do you want to wear pants or a dress?” Toddler (I’d guess less than 2): “No.” Moments before, the same toddler ran naked away from her mom and complained she was cold. I don’t miss that age.

I was literally about to quote skeet this Pope Leo story with the comment “Butlerian Jihad now!”, but Colin already did the work for me.

#WIPWednesday : I’m nearly done with one green project, so it’s time to swatch for another. Yarn and pattern details in the alt text. #Knitting #KnitSky 🧶
3 handknit projects in progress, plus a swatch.

In the back is a raglan sweater with lace details on the sleeves and front panel (Faux Paux Pullover by Brienne Moody) in a fingering weight suri silk naturally dyed by Petal & Hank.

On top of that is a nearly finished Softly Slipover Vest (pattern by Sarah Opie). Using 3 yarns held together: one is handspun (I used a green batt with sari silk and plied it with tonal green commercial top), mohair/silk dyed by Ewetopia in tonal greens, and a bright green yak/silk by Reywa Fibers.

Hard to see, but there’s a shortie sock (Runaway Shorties by Sarah Jordan) in a variegated purple 2-ply sock yarn (Squishy Sock by Hank Me Home Tonight, colorway “Sangria”).

Finally, a swatch in Ridge Sport by Ewetopia, in colorway Spruce.

I wish the MPS “school transformation” had gone harder. Right now, it’s restricted to existing buildings. I wish they could have taken a wholistic approach at constructing new, modern buildings, taking into account current population distribution and transit options.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : the only spinning I did this week was in a class I took at the WI Sheep and Wool Festival, focused on spinning wool with a distaff. I also learned clasped spindling, which was totally new to me. I had fun learning and being a beginner at something. #Handspinning 🧶
A picture of spindles and distaves with spun and unspun Blue Faced Leicester wool dyed red.

In the upper left are a couple of top whorl drop spindles with spun singles, and some pre drafted red fiber would along a ring distaff. The distaff is plywood with a bird on top (it is modeled off a Roman distaff with the same decoration, but that was made out of bronze).

Diagonal from top left to lower right is a longer distaff, meant to be I steered into the spinner’s belt. It’s basically a wooden dowel with a finial at the top. Some ribbon is tied to the finial. Wool was rolled around the top 10 inches or so, and then a ribbon was wound around the wool to hold it in place.

On the lower left is a bottom whorl spindle meant to be used for clasped spinning. It was made from a chopstick with a small whorl made of sculpey. Some of the same red fiber has been spun on it, but it is a larger diameter and more uneven, as it was the first time I did any clasped spindling.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : I’m near the end of of spinning the singles of this current project (I plan to chain ply it). I also washed the yarn I spun last week. This seems more suited to weaving than knitting. Both projects are fiber from @fossilfibers.bsky.social #Handspinning 🧶
An electric spinning wheel with some partially spun singles. Mostly showing pinks and purples spun, with some green deeper down. The unspun fiber had pink, orange, and yellow showing. The fiber is 80/20 Rambouillet/Silk from the Fossil Fibers Cephalopoda mystery braid club. This colorway was “Blanket Octopus”A handspun skein of 2-ply yarn on a sunny yellow with some variations. 333 yards of heaving fingering weight.

Ir was spun from a batt I made from the February 2026 Quiet Sip blending club from Fossil Fibers. The theme was chamomile tea with honey and ginger. It had dyed (yellow and an almost peach color) and undyed Border Leicester locks, with some fun mix-ins including dyed mohair (yellow and green), flax (bright yellow), viscose (white), and sari silk (brownish gold).

#FOFriday : my finished MN Star Hat, using the pattern and yarn (from from Purls & Pines) from @knitandbolt.bsky.social for this year’s MN Yarn Shop Hop. I have a ton of yarn leftover and love the colors, so I will probably make socks with it. #Knitting #KnitSky
The top of a handknit colorwork tam. It is knit with a dark tonal blue yarn and a white yarn with blue speckles. The crown decreases and colorwork pattern make the shape of an 8-pointed star (not unlike the one on the current Minnesota state flag). The top half of Selbu stars (are visible along the brim). The side view of a handknit colorwork tam. It is knit with a dark tonal blue yarn and a white yarn with blue speckles. The br is knit with corrugated ribbing, followed by a Latvian braid, then lice stitch bordered by checkered zigzags. The middle used Selbu stars, and then more checkerboard zigzags leading to the star motif made by the crown decreases. The inside of a handknit colorwork tam. It is knit with a dark tonal blue yarn and a white yarn with blue speckles. If I say so myself, I did a nice job carrying the floats and the inside looks almost as good as the right side.

#WIPWednesday : I’m up to 4 WIPs, which probably won’t last long, as I usually feel like 3 is my max for making noticeable progress from week to week. Yarn and pattern details in the alt text. #Knitting #KnitSky
4 handknit projects in progress, plus a swatch. Clockwise from top left:

The start of a Softly Slipover Vest (pattern by Sarah Opie). Using 3 yarns held together: one is handspun (I used a green batt with sari silk and plied it with tonal green commercial top), mohair/silk dyed by Ewetopia in tonal greens, and a bright green yak/silk by Reywa Fibers.

A triangular shawl made of 3 different bases (all from Muse 2320, Egret: a suri/silk; Starling: a sparkly fingering weight, and Neon Tweed) all dyed the same colorway, “Celestial” (a tealy blue). All in garter stitch stripes in a pattern I’m making up.

A raglan sweater with lace details on the sleeves and front panel (Faux Paux Pullover by Brienne Moody) in a fingering weight suri silk naturally dyed by Petal & Hank.

I hate that I’ve always been skeptical about “you must drink X amount to be hydrated,” and that any pushback to that thinking is seen as being in favor of AI. I drink when I’m thirsty (and probably far less than many others) and I’m fine with that.

#FOFriday : I finished a pair of socks for one of my kids. I didn’t use a pattern but did use the book “Custom Socks” by @kateatherley.bsky.social . Toe up, shadow wrapped short toe heels, knit until the yarn (Urth Uneek Sock mini) ran out. #Knitting #Knitsky
A pair of striped handknit socks. They start with warm colors at the toe and transition to cooler colors around the heel.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : I’m about halfway spinning singles for my current project and spent some time at my carder. I carded up 2 @fossilfibers.bsky.social blending club shipments and did a test batt of a Finn fleece that’s been in my stash for too long. #Handspinning 🧶
An espinner with spun singles. The main colors that show are lime green and purple. Dyed by Fossil Fibers, the colorway is “Blanket Octopus” on 80/20 Rambouillet/Silk.A partially unrolled carded batt of fiber. It was from the February 2026 Quiet Sip blending club from Fossil Fibers. The theme was chamomile tea with honey and ginger. It had dyed (yellow and an almost peach color) and undyed Border Leicester locks, with some fun mix-ins including dyed mohair (yellow and green), flax (bright yellow), viscose (white), and sari silk (brownish gold).

4: Finally, I did a sample batt of a Finn fleece that’s been sitting in my stash a while. In the fleece, I thought it was more a light brown, but carded up it appears more grey (albeit a warm grey).Another Fossil Fibers blending club, but with the current Pollinators theme. Specifically, this shipment’s theme was hummingbirds. It had 2 shades of grey Corriedale and Shetland in white and then dyed multiple shades of green. Finally, some bright pink bamboo and purple tussah silk.A partially unrolled carded batt of Finn fleece, along with one of the locks. I thought it was more brown in the fleece, but it seems more grey (albeit a warm grey) carded up.

We just introduced our oldest to Jurassic Park. He knows of it, but he hadn’t watched it before. That gave me this idea. You’re welcome.
A hastily put together meme. Specifically the one with Fred from Scooby-Doo unmasking a villain.

Top panel: Fred reaching for the mask with the caption “Who’s responsible for encouraging use of lever door handles for ADA reasons?”

Bottom panel: a velociraptor from the 1993 Jurassic Park clumsily pasted over the cartoon villain’s head.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : I was afraid of muddying up this colorful braid (from @fossilfibers.bsky.social), so I just decided to spin it end to end and will chain ply it. The grey skein puffed up to DK weight after washing. #Handspinning 🧶
An electric spinning wheel with some partially spun singles. Mostly showing pinks and purples spun. The unspun fiber also has a neon green, some brown, and orange showing. The fiber is 80/20 Rambouillet/Silk from the Fossil Fibers Cephalopoda mystery braid club. This colorway was “Blanket Octopus”A finished skein of handspun 2-ply yarn. It’s marked. The white ply is from a Rambouillet x Wensleydale cross. The grey ply is the same fleece blended with 20% wallaby. This was from the July 2026 Melly Knits Butt Hair Sommelier.

#SundaysAreForSpinning : Final #TourDeFleece stats: 4 skeins, 1709 yards (1463 meters) from 440 grams. Also some finished pre-Tour skeins and my first post-tour spin. #Handspinning 🧶
4 skeins of handspun yarn. The top skein is a 2-ply, heathered brownish grey and is Rambouillet blended with 20% yak down.

The bottom 3 skeins are 3-ply Shaniko/silk blends. All dyed by the same dyer (Snug & Spun Fiber Co). There’s a light blue (on the left), a dark bluish green (in the right), and a multicolored skein with pink, blue, and undyed (or very lightly dyed) fiber.A handspun skein of grey Cheviot yarn. I intended it for socks, but I think I put too much twist in. It has a harsh hand.A grey skein of handspun yarn (mostly grey Targhee) with tweedy bits of white and purple silk. Two wooden spinning wheel bobbins with spun singles.
