The Gary/Chicago International Airport has a history of hosting deportation flights. Yesterday, a small protest march was on its way back from the airport when Gary police suddenly attacked. Matthew Kaplan, who was documenting the march, was arrested and slapped with charges for no clear reason.

police today while documenting a peaceful protest against deportations at the Gary Airport. Two protestors were arrested as well and I saw at least one other being roughed up pretty badly. Marchers were demonstrating at the Gary Airport today, as has happened on many days in the past few years, because deported peoples in Northwest Indiana are often flown out of that airfield. Marchers carried signs demanding "Abolish ICE" (the Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm of the Department of Homeland Security), asking for "Education not Deportation" and stating that "No Human is Illegal".

Originating at the nearby South Shore train stop, some fifty protestors chanted their way in the cold, about a mile to the airport, where signs were held aloft and at one point an attempt was made to affix a banner to the chain link fence. This was thwarted by airport employees.

After about 10 minutes the group began the march back to the train station. Soon some 10-1 5 police cars were tailing the march and ordered the group to get off of the active highway. This order was eventually obeyed, but almost immediately after the group was on the grassy shoulder, police began to push people down and make arrests. I did not see or hear any provocations.

While I and two other photographers were documenting the arrests, a police officer grabbed me and arrested me. I was taken to the Gary Police Station where I spent about two hours locked up. Eventually I was released on my own recognizance. I have a date in court on Wednesday January 22nd. I am charged with Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Trespass, and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Two protesters were in the jail while I was there. I do not know if they are out yet.
