The day Hubble discovered the Universe. 103 years ago Today, Edwin Hubble took a picture of this Cepheid variable in M31 or the Andromed galaxy. He concluded that it was a separate, external galaxy and that was the day our understanding of the universe radically changed. Original post

This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

in #MathsToday, Y9 worked on versions of @studymaths.bsky.social's Multiplication Grids modified to include negatives. Then we moved on to equivalent fractions, where I put a fraction on the board and they had to put an equivalent on their board that no-one else also had...

This is a photograph of the edge of one of Saturn's rings, looking down from above. Those spiky dark shapes are shadows. Shadows of giant towers of ice and dust grains clumped together that rise up to three *kilometres* above the 10-m thick rings.
A series of bands cross the image from left to right, brighter at the bottom and darkening towards the top. A band of empty space is at the top of the image. About a quarter down from the top is a complex pattern of jagged, spiky shadows cast onto the rings. The icy towers casting the shadows are seen here at a highly oblique angle.

1941. It was references to the needs of"the present time" and "Armed Forces" that gave it away for me. And, of course, the "student" could only be male.

I like this, and have used Dr Frost to do something similar in the past, creating question templates to build a set of similar homeworks which the students attempt during the week, and are then tested on at the end. Going to try it again this year, with the added use of exercise books.

#MathsToday Found in a charity shop... Can you guess when it was first published? Last century, clues in the Preface.
The cover to the book, "A Short Practical Mathematics" by F.G.W. Brown PREFACE

ONE effect of the intensive use of mechanisms which is characteristic of the present time is a demand for a minimum of knowledge of the elementary processes of mathematics and their practical application. The student is often prevented by lack of time and opportunity from undertaking a full course of practical mathematics, but that is no reason why he should be debarred from gaining, or revising, sufficient knowledge of mathematical principles and operations to enable him to use intelligently the machines he has to operate.

This book has been prepared for such students. It makes no claim to be a full course of practical mathematics, and it will be obvious that mathematical nicety has had to be sacrificed to the needs of the hour; it is believed, however, that it will provide those entering the Fighting Services or engineering courses with just the knowledge of mathematical principles, and exercise in their use, which are needed. Special attention is given to the use of contracted methods of working, and there are chapters on numerical trigonometry and elementary mechanics.

I agree. The ...other company's other is very shiny, but I felt detached from the homework as a teacher. I love putting together a good set of questions on DrFrost. The only thing I have kept from *them* is the bookwork idea. Students have to show me their written working for the last question..

Just finished "Nuclear War: A Scenario" by Annie Jacobsen. An amazingly gripping book. Rigorously researched, told in an unflinching style that reminded me of the recent "A House of Dynamite". Feels strange to recommend, but if you get a chance, read it. And let's hope it never happens... #BookSky

I've just added the Algebraic Identities / Comparing Coefficients / Algebraic Fractions tasks I made back in 2022 to interwovenmaths.com/algebraic-id... My favourite part is these discussions, where [spoilers] you can show that 42 and 9 are in fact the only options, each with a nice interpretation.
Two algebraic fraction identities labelled a and b, asking which is easier. The coefficients 42 in a and 9 in b are highlighted in purpleTwo follow-up algebraic fraction identities labelled c and d. Question c asks why the identity with 14 highlighted is impossible; question d asks which other values of the highlighted coefficient d are possible.

"Pythagoras" by Kitty Ferguson, has been sat on my TBR list for years. I wish I had read it earlier. The story of Pythagoras' life alone is amazing, and probably nothing like what you think. The journey into the influence he had on the history of the world since is fascinating. #BookSky #MathsToday
