Doesn't matter how hard they try to get rid of us - we have international law on our side! ⚖️ The Sea-Watch 5 is back in the Mediterranean and ready to support people on the move. We wish our crew fair winds. 📸 Maria Giorgi

We will find out. We filed an access-to-documents request with Frontex to learn what they saw and who they informed. Europe owes answers and a state-run search-and-rescue program!

Two mothers lost children, and another woman lost her sister. We assume Frontex, the EU's border agency, orbited over them with its Eagle6 aircraft. If so, they decided not to intervene. Did authorities leave them to die because they couldn't be forced back to Libya or Tunisia?

12 hours. That's how long the Italian authorities knew about this boat before our crew reached the survivors. 12 hours in which people died. 6 people, including children, are still missing. What happened in that time? 👇

All 28 survivors finally reached Lampedusa & disembarked safely. The 2 dead bodies were transferred to the Italian authorities. Our thoughts are with the survivors, the deceased & their loved ones. We will keep fighting for safe passages!

At least 6 people, including 3 children, are reportedly missing. Lampedusa has finally been assigned to us as a place of safety. Our Aurora crew is on its way there with the 28 survivors of the horrific shipwreck and 2 dead bodies. 👉 tinyurl.com/arjc9jak

🔴 At least 2 people are dead, including a child. 28 survived because our Aurora crew rescued them from a sinking dinghy and the Hasdrubal gas platform in the morning of 29.09. Our anger and grief are almost impossible to put into words. People have died again. The EU is guilty.

Yesterday our ship Aurora and our Seabird plane reached a rubber boat with 13 people on board, signaled by @alarmphone.bsky.social south of Lampedusa. The Italian coastguard intervened and brought all the people safely to land.

102 people alive today because NGOs did what EU states are legally bound to do and refuse to. We don't know the fate of everyone else we spotted. Civil society is filling a gap states created and abandon daily. Survivors deserve a future, not indifference.

21 Sept: another Mayday Relay from an unknown station. We flew out and found 24 people fighting for their lives at sea. Sea-Eye 5 answered the call EU authorities didn't, and rescued everyone on board.

A Libyan militia boat closed in - these 31 people could have been dragged back to Libya. MSF's Oyvon reached them in time. That same day we spotted a black rubber boat, 47 people aboard: NGO ship Solidaire rescued them all, just in time.

But the NATO warship didn’t launch a rescue operation. Search and rescue is a legal obligation under international law, not an act of charity states can opt out of when inconvenient.

We do not follow the EU's values compass. Because that would mean ignoring international law. Over the past two days, three NGO ships rescued 102 people at sea. Here's what our aircrew witnessed. 🧵

While Frontex is observing human rights violations without intervening, the responsible authorities repeatedly rely on merchant vessels and NGOs to fill their operational gaps.

Interceptions, communication manipulation and persistent failure by authorities were the main observations of our aircraft between January and June this year. While NGOs are being detained, the EU & its accomplices are continuing their violence in the Central Mediterranean.

All these people are safe: Ocean Viking rescued them. We're relieved, but relief is not the point. Somewhere in Valletta, someone is disappointed that these people made it out alive, not drowned or vanished into a Libyan detention camp. From up there, we see who never shows up.

Sea-Watch (international) @en.sea-watch.org · 09/09/2026
Not this time. @sosmediterranee.org ship Ocean Viking reached them before militias had the chance to. While still in the area, Seabird 3 spotted a second boat and then a third. 78 people in the exact waters that are Malta's job. A job Malta quit a long time ago.

Sea-Watch (international) @en.sea-watch.org · 09/09/2026
In Malta's Search and Rescue Region, "rescue" stands for ignorance. Most people who risk drowning here don't get saved - they get kidnapped by Libyan militias and disappear. Yesterday, Seabird 3 spotted a boat with 17 people in distress, and everyone knew what would come next.

Traditional German values, made in Ramstein: for one week, rival Libyan forces are brought to the table — as long as it serves Western interests. First reconciled, then trained, then patrolled, then the dead are fished out of the sea. Just business as usual.

Earlier attempts to outsource asylum responsibility elsewhere (e.g. Italy-Albania) have already been ruled unlawful by the European Court of Justice and national courts. 17 UN Special Rapporteurs have also spoken out firmly against deportation camps.

Sea-Watch (international) @en.sea-watch.org · 04/09/2026
Whoever forces people into deportation camps outside the EU wants to push them out of EU legal protection. But human rights obligations can't simply be outsourced. That's why Alexander is meeting his right-wing EU colleagues today, to conjure up a legal basis that fits.

People are to be put out of sight. The list of possible partner countries includes for instance Rwanda and Albania. Dobrindt calls this migration policy. We call it state-organized forced disappearances.

The meeting is about deportation camps outside the EU, for people who migrated to the EU and currently have no residence permit, and for people who can't be sent back to their countries of origin because they lack papers. As simple as it is authoritarian:

This is the reality of EU policy: Someone chose the possibility of severe burns in open water over Libya. That is the terror this system produces. The EU funds it, backs it, and looks away. We won't look away. We will keep witnessing and keep saying what we see.

The people were intercepted and abducted to Libya. While already on board the Libyan vessel, one person jumped into the open sea, into a slick of leaked fuel from the canisters, to get away. Fuel on skin in seawater causes severe chemical burns.

A live show of Europe's brutal migration regime. Yesterday, our Seabird 3 witnessed a distress case, and while @sos-humanity.bsky.social's ship Humanity1 was in position and could have rescued about 10 people from a rubber boat, a Libyan RHIB got there first.

People in distress have a right to a place of safety: somewhere they're not in danger and basic human needs are met. Libya is not that place. When an EU agency helps Libyan forces to drag people back to Libya, that's not border control. That's Frontex breaking international law.

A man in military clothing climbed aboard the wooden boat and took the wheel. They started driving the wooden boat east. A second grey speedboat joined: two assets forcing 70 people back toward the country they were fleeing while Solidaire, a real rescue ship, was right there.

On open channel 16, audible to anyone tuned in, they identified as "Libyan coastguard," militias known for its brutality against people who flee. Frontex gave them the coordinates. No hesitation, no second thought. Then we saw it: a white speedboat heading straight for the case.

Every one of these boats was designed to save a life. Europe decided which lives - and hands the rest back to their captors. That's not a glitch in EU policy. That's THE policy.

Had Seabird 3 not been overhead, they would likely never have been found. Europe funds, trains, and equips this force. When it fires on rescuers and drags people back into violence, it isn't a rogue actor. It's Europe's mercenary at the border, doing exactly what it's paid to do.

Instead of recovering them, the so-called Libyan coastguard turned toward Louise Michel and fired two shots. Their crew is safe, but the two who went overboard were left in the water at dusk, almost drowning. Only later were they, and everyone in distress, taken back to Libya.
