2025 has been dubbed the 'Year of the Blooming Octopus' by @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social. A blessing and a curse to fishers, and an absolute spectacle for British divers! Looking forward to discussing tomorrow over on BBC Radio Kent and BBC South East Today 🐙 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Apologies for the inactivity, I've had my head buried in the sand... and among corals searching for very rare intertidal coral reef spiders on Lizard Island 🕷️🪸 It was a dream to be invited on this field trip by my good pal @samjakeengland.bsky.social. Spoiler alert 🚨 we found them! 👀

We don’t need deep-sea mining, or its environmental harms. Here’s why
Commercial mining of the deep sea could begin soon. But these metals and minerals are not scarce. Mining will be harmful and the economic benefits are overstated.

A new study by @cefasgovuk.bsky.social projects how such warm UK sea temperatures could cause a boom in endangered #sharks, #rays and #oysters 🦈. I enjoyed discussing these new insights just now on #BBCRadio5Live! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Have you also get em dash anxiety recently? Or is it just me? I've come on here and ask you all if you too have used em dashes in your scientific writing and are now getting nervous of continuing to because it is considered an "indicator of ChatGBT use". www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...

Are Em Dashes Really a Sign of AI Writing?
Viral posts and clips on social media suggest the em dash is the product of AI chatbots, with some calling the punctuation mark a 'ChatGPT hyphen.'

Science (and science policy, and conservation) friends, I need your help! We are collecting *specific, clear* examples of harms caused by the Trump administration's attacks on science, to be included in an open letter. Can be links to news stories/social media posts. 🧪🦑🌎 #SciComm #SciPol
The Trump administration’s attacks on scientific funding, restrictions on Federal scientist activities, and
indiscriminate firing have caused chaos, panic, and harm.

We need *specific* examples of harms caused
by these policies to include in an open letter.
Grants cut, projects cancelled, jobs lost.

Feel free to send news stories, blog posts, or social media posts that mention these, as well as original contributions.

Still hope for coral reefs. Using 28-years of data in Seychelles, we find reefs recovering 4-5 years faster from the 2016 bleaching event, than they did after 1998. Also, a reef that had regime-shifted to macroalgae for over 15 years, is recovering to coral. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
