If there’s one silver lining on AI’s intersection with the education system right now, it’s that we may get a whole movement of students who start thinking critically early on about the purpose of education, and demanding that the institutions they’re in meet their visions for it.

🚨 New publication alert 🚨 In which I join an all-star group of scholars to discuss the problems with what we call "critical optimism" about AI in education and offer instead three forms of AI refusal: curricular, bureaucratic, and administrative. The article is paywalled, so DM me for a copy.

loling at “need to have Duckworth's grit to survive Schmidt’s drone-saturated future hellscape.” But yeah, well spotted on the throughline - they’re def all conservative, but different flavors.

Also, kind of a weird mix of people? Like, maybe I missed something in his stance around kids and AI, but based on his takes in Anxious Generation (in nuanced as they were), I’d just sort of expect Haidt to be like “keep them as far away from it as possible” and Schmidt to be… not that?

We also need to resubmit (mayhaps with some edits) the symposium @charleswlogan.bsky.social led on that didn’t make it in this year!

I was really feeling so much technooptimism/determinism this year at #ISLS26. Bummed I didn’t get to make it to your session!

Can’t wait to check this out! I’ve been referencing it in a bunch of work I’ve been doing internally with an org, and also look forward to in some public facing resources soon.

Thanks for the shout out Charles! And we’re pretty stoked that we’ll be able bring a lot of these ideas further into the field in future work with CSTA.

Meanwhile, over here at the premier conference for the learning sciences, I have literally not been able to find one thing on the agenda that attempts to address this question. Pretty disheartening…

Ever seen a news story about AI and thought “this could be an episode of Black Mirror”? We're running a research study where we ask people to imagine generative AI futures and pitch their own science fiction story. More detail at the link and please share! www.internetruleslab.com/black-mirror...

If we don’t end up owning AI literacy and defining it on our terms (ie, critical sociotechnical literacy), we know who’s going to end up defining it and for what ends.

The view that personal responsibility is the appropriate response to harmful sociotechnical systems goes back a long way (see: most digital literacy/citizenship frameworks of the ‘00s). Getting to more expansive sociotechnical literacies is a push, but starting to catch on. Even the pope gets it.

A spectacularly tone deaf choice on the part of the university. Not to mention hypocritical, given that they also censored students, cancelling any student speakers while elevating a vIeWpOiNt DiVeRsIty guy. Students on point in their response.

And, we're so excited that we're continuing to collaborate with CSTA to figure out how to support this work on the ground in classrooms (and we have an announcement to share soon on that front!). Big shout out to Kapor Foundation who supported this work.

Our hope is that the piece can serve as a north star for how we think of the responsibility of K12 schools, and the computer science education field more broadly, when it comes to preparing students to become agents of change in relation to tech, rather than its subject.

We based the piece on conversations with a group of experts who focus on education on ethics and sociotechnical shaping of computing, as well as an extensive literature review of related scholarship.

• Sociotechnical ethics: How do we move beyond the notion of ‘one right answer’ when it comes to ethically responsible computing, without also reinforcing the idea that ‘anything goes’?

• Sociotechnical understandings: How do we overcome the barrier of ‘techno-myths’ when teaching computer science? • Sociotechnical topics: How do we promote an expansive view of computational harms, and their remedies, that goes beyond the idea of personal responsibility?

We argue that that all students need a firm grounding in four things, each of which responds to a key need and question:

If you've been feeling like K12 students need to be better prepared to understand and critically respond to the impacts of fast moving technologies in our world—AI, of course, but really the whole technosocial landscape—this piece speaks to those concerns.

Co-authored with Jean Ryoo, David Phelps, Brooke Shields, and Michael Lachney, it's based on work we've been doing with Bryan Twarek and Jacob Koressel at Computer Science Teachers Association to more deeply infuse questions of ethics and impacts into the revised computer science standards.

How do we help K12 students push back on the idea that 'tech is inevitable'? I'm excited to share this new article "A Sociotechnical Vision for Ethical, Responsible, and Critical PK-12 Computing Education", recently published in ACM InRoads, that speaks to this question: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

Since tomorrow is Labor Day and school is in session, I'd like to argue (again) that teaching about GenAI should include discussion of the extractive, exploitative labor conditions that make the technology possible. 🧵

There are four main arguments for AI in education: 1. Efficiency, saving teachers time 2. Equity, making education inclusive 3. Improving outcomes by personalizing learning 4. It's inevitable Is it true? Nope. Micro 🧵

Seriously. In search of user-uptake they’ve made sycophantic algorithms, ultimately making the tool actually worse at making clear for users what it is/isn’t helpful for.

Not surprising. Curious if you’ve had any experience with purpose-built scholarship synthesis tools like Elicit? I’ve poked around, generally found them decently useful as an alternative GScholar, but they state themselves that users shouldn’t assume accuracy (“assume around 90% accurate”).

I can't remember the study, but I'm pretty sure this kind of finding exists among pilots in the context of various flight automation systems.
