emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
it also feels like it contains my most robust and mature work to date. because i give accounts of the self, agency, social practices, social reality, meta-aesthetics, and metaphilosophy, i think there’s a lot of conceptual machinery here that can travel beyond adornment!
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
the book engages with fashion and music theory and criticism, analytic aesthetics, continental philosophy, queer theory and trans philosophy, and pragmatism. in this way, it’s got almost every life experience, every personal interest, and every philosophical position i have jammed into it!
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
along the way we do deep dives into trans fashion, hardcore, punk, country music, artificial nails, halloween, handbags, lesbian pop music, drag, dennis rodman, and more! we do genealogies of nails, bags, theatrical costuming, philosophy of music, film, and fashion, and of philosophy itself!
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
fashion is practice in which we are always progressing and revising but never towards the goal of completion. it’s a social practice which struggles constantly to improve while also aiming at remaining forever unfinished. perhaps philosophy can and should do all these things too!
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
the punchline of the book ends up being that we should practice philosophy 'in the fashion of fashion'. fashion is a site of becoming, a technology for helping us see what is possible in the actual, a place for materially realizing those possibilities, a domain of creation, play, and contestation.
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
finally, if this view is right then we might wonder what happens when we apply what we learned about adornment as a social practice to philosophy as one. the result is a very different picture of what philosophy is and what it should be!
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
importantly, fashion turns out to be an especially good case study for us to learn about how selves, agency, social practices, values, and shared worlds work! it’s an easy way in (for reasons i explain in the book) but the lessons we learn about these things travel beyond adornment!
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
the second book argues that one of the most productive ways to think about fashion is as a “technology of becoming”, which allows us to imagine, rehearse, and materially realize new possibilities, selves, social practices, values, and worlds.
121
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
the first book argues that there is no downtown of fashion; adornment is a site of a number of different kinds of doing and we should avoid focusing on fashion as a site of communication or as principally a place of meaning and identity. the result is a picture that is more active and social.
120
emmie malone 🏳️‍⚧️ @emmiemalone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
It is essentially 3 books in one: one on adornment, one on agency and social ontology, and one on metaphilosophy. Interestingly (I hope!), all three of these books happen concurrently throughout each chapter, not back to back!

quote tweet by Nathan Cofnas replying to JK Rowling who said:

More than one thing can be true. Nathan Cofnas is a racist. No argument there.

Also true: Arday claimed to have been non-verbal until the age of eleven. He span a false narrative about being autistic and mute, then learning to speak and write so well he gained a PhD. What harm did he do to parents with children who're genuinely non-verbal, by selling them false hope?
