I would not like an AI summary, I would not like it on a boat, I would not like the email bloat, I do not like it on a chair, I would not like it anywhere! I do not like them on a phone, I do not like them in my home, I do not want them on a search, I do not like them in a church

Heartened to see that my university is ending its contract with Turnitin before the next academic year, because Turnitin is going to use student submissions to train AI models. Institutions can and should resist this stuff!

Regency-era mugs, gifts for #19thc children who managed to stick to their books & learn to read. Their mottoes are grim but maybe necessary admonitions, too, for the academic who's soldiering on while coming to terms with the fact that it's August now. I.e. I feel seen. #AcademicLife
The motto painted on a red background on this little mug reads "Idleness Brings Disgrace." The motto painted on the purple-ish background of this little mug is "Be Willing to do Well without Praise."

Hell yeah 💅
The new translation will also give readers far more of Wilson's scholarly commentary. "I'm also going to quadruple the number of endnotes because endnotes are really fun to write," she said.

I had a wonderful time in London this weekend. It was a pleasure to be invited to speak by the @gaskellsociety.bsky.social on similarities between Austen's Emma (1815) and Gaskell's Sylvia's Lovers (1863) to such a warm and welcoming group!

My summer in Southampton included: walking the Jane Austen trail, a flying visit to Tudor House and Gardens, touring the Titanic exhibition at SeaCity, hiking through the Royal Country Park to see the famous Victorian Hospital that Arthur Conan Doyle's Dr Watson attended.

Parents insist their kids go to college to get business degrees. Administrators respond by defunding the humanities and social sciences, while hiring business profs at ~2X what historians get paid. Meanwhile, businesses say over and over that they want to hire humanities and social science majors.

Having amassed, last year, examples of bugs in 📚s, I'm sticking with my theme of volatilia, but now collecting examples of feathers in 📚s. Here's one (a real one!), intended for an album, from the John Johnson collection of ephemera at the Bodleian. I love it! If you have any, will you share pls?
Cut lace embossed card with, in the centre, the caption "The Tongue of the Absent" and a picture of an inkwell, a letter just begun, and a quill pen. The pen is formed of an actual feather.

#OTD in 1743 Anna Laetitia Barbauld was born. She was a renowned poet, children's author, shrewd editor, and an insightful essayist. Here are some of my very favourite quotes from 'On the Origins and Progress of Novel-Writing' a preface to the British Novelists (1810).
"the humble novel is always ready to enliven the gloom of solitude, to soothe the languor of debility and disease, to win the attention from pain or vexatious occurrences""the unpardonable sin in a novel is dullness: however grave or wise it may be, if its author possesses no powers of amusing, he has no business to write novels""it is safer to meet with a bad character in the pages of a fictitious story, than in the polluted walks of life""Some perhaps may think that too much importance has been already given to a subject so frivolous, but a discriminating taste is no where more called for than with regard to a species of books which every body reads."

Love to refuse a prompt. static1.squarespace.com/static/53a4b...
REFLECTIONS ON AI IN THE CLASSROOM:
How We are Not Using Al in the Classroom
By Sonja Drimmer & Christopher J. Nygren
Premise
Prompt engineering is a term that has become commonplace since the widespread availability of generative Al applications like ChatGPT. The idea is that the outputs of the large language models (LLMs) on which these applications are based are only as good as the prompts that are input: vague prompts result in equally vague outputs. And thus was born the race to train for careers in prompt engineering. Unfortunately, the bubble seems to have burst before even the first generation of students was trained for this career outcome.
We were given a prompt as an invitation to participate in this newsletter: "How are you using Al in the classroom?" While we have accepted this invitation, we are engaging in the most humanistic act we can imagine—refusing the prompt.”

If I could go back in time, one of my trips would be to pay Dr John Rae. He went to the Arctic in search of the Franklin Expedition. He found their camp and confirmed that they had resorted to cannibalism. Lady Franklin didn't like the answer and refused to pay him the reward.
