GitHub hits CTRL-Z, decides it will train its AI with user data after all
As of April 24 you'll be feeding the Octocat unless you opt out Microsoft's GitHub next month plans to begin using customer interaction data – "specifically inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context" – to train its AI models.…

what even is cheating now! Exactly that! Do have a look at Steal this poem: dogtrax.edublogs.org/2014/01/16/r... - which explored exactly that - and when we used that as a prompt for discussion with our students - it was fascinating - and their poems were too! #LTHEchat

And look at how we support students who make rational decisions (ethics, environment, deskilling etc) for wanting to avoid AI usage, we’ve seen this in areas like creative subjects, philosophy, environmental sciences etc - more so than say business & engineering #LTHEchat

Look out for us sharing research from our 2025 students/ staff survey of AI use across Scotland - it should be being published next week on our ScAITEN website (#LTHEchat)

#LTHEchat - I think that the AIAS scale is probably more useful for saying “I’d advise AI in this way because …. “ - rather than using it as “You must / you can’t “ in this assessment

A1 - the other big challenge we have, as subject matter experts (or even vaguely knowledgeable!) it’s hard to remember back to not knowing it, and (in many cases) an inexpert learner. Our short cuts were Letts Study Guides. A1 is a shortcut, but one that hides gaps (like snow bridges over crevasses)

A1 #LTHEchat I think as well as what we care about- it’s encouraging students to think about what they want to care about (and need to care about)

have to say, not convinced about the new Apps thing - some programmes (office, I'm looking at you) weren't showing in it (though others that are in the Dock are, so it's not that); nor can I sort by *my* logic. (e.g. "Apple Guff" & Screencasting - two things I used to have, 1 ignored, 1 used!

My Mac Mini (M4) is keen for me to update to Tahoe: Google's suggested videos are: Who's done it & which video best fits your experience?
4 videos:
MacOS 26.0.1 Updated Faster, Better or Worse?
MacOS Tahoe: Is it as bad as they say?
Don't update to Mac0S Tahoe
MacOS Tahoe is AMAZING

I think the environmental issues are useful to discuss, yes training takes a lot, but streaming Netflix etc also does. We need to be mindful of all digital environmental issues. Ethical issues such as copyright, bias etc are more specific in AI context than other scenarios.

That’s what gets Ed & Learning techs a bad rep :( To me, I’m an Educator first & foremost, technologist 2nd. So, AI, useful to generate *potential* m/c questions to help students untangle a complex paper, or similar for an open question in a discussion board. Not the exam or formal coursework

Thank you! I thought it was under lifestyle. Perhaps I'm muddling Guardian navigation with BBC. (Interestingly, for something under UK, I can see 3 articles, Derbyshire, Hong Kong & Estonia. So, it's actually UK/Global education :)

Why has @theguardian.com stopped having a dedicated Education section. One that I'm sure used to have school / University subsections.
A list of all the news sections and subsections on the The Guardian News paper. They used to have an Education section (I think it was Family & Education). It's no longer there.

I can’t actually remember learning to ride my bike, but it clearly involved bruised knees, scrapes & figuring out what to do to not fall off. I do remember learning to wear a t-shirt (not no top) after falling off into the nettles one very hot day as I was figuring out the balancing stuff!

I also think there are huge diffs between personal reflection (which could even be “ thank goodness I never have to do that again”), reflection with peers, and reflection for assessment which is what many HEIs mean by reflection & many students don’t like
010
Emma Duke-Williams @emmadw.bsky.social · 21/05/2025
I think some areas just don’t call it “reflection”. For example in software engineering, you’d be asking did it perform as expected? What about edge cases? Could it be done more efficiently? It’s just not called reflection
000
Emma Duke-Williams @emmadw.bsky.social · 21/05/2025
Agree, can also highlight reflection for self, reflection with trusted peers, reflection for assessment … all start the same, may well emphasise different aspects
000
Emma Duke-Williams @emmadw.bsky.social · 21/05/2025
I think one of the potential dangers of that is *every* teacher getting students to do that. Doing it at the start to then help students understand the importance of doing it if using AI; maybe some will decide that working with original texts is actually more efficient (for them)

Primary school children are excellent at philosophy as they won't stop asking 'why'? It's a shame that education tries to knock that out of them (and, of course, we know why the state might want to do that). #LTHEChat

I think I’d see part time being the default, campuses more set up for group work, more interdisciplinarity, space to work in, access to expensive tools/ software/ art rooms etc and time with tutors to push - almost Montessori style learning for adults. I can but dream A6

Banish all those “counting” things, much more qualitative evaluation of the student experience through the course, not a huge reliance on a single survey in their last year. But, as others have said ££ & people

Q4 - while I was teaching (2000 - 2015) on an MSc in Information Systems, there was a big switch from mostly UK students & relatively few recently graduates - most had worked for several years in different careers, to more international than UK & most came straight from UG degree

A3, as a 1980s student, we didn’t have the same pressures of needing to get a part time job, other than to top up the grant etc. That gave more time, and there was a lot less to choose from to read. Could spend time reading, not finding, filtering, then reading

A3 #LTHEchat, emphasing ILOs, using rubrics can lead to a stifling of creativity, but “can” not does. Art schools, for example demonstrate you can have creativity with rubrics, just have to plan carefully

A2 #LTHEchat - I’ll go back a bit further, I graduated 39 years ago, so, while the sink or swim 1980s are long gone, there are still gaps for some students, opportunities for more staff dev (though challenges with staff numbers, hard to support without staff)

A1 - ensuring the learning opportunities enable students to complete assessments (& that they allow students to show they’ve met the Learning outcomes) - I prefer the term “backwards design”, I know others prefer constructive alignment. Concept more important than name! #LTHEchat
