I suppose the opening section of my book is a good example of the narrative voice. :) #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Text reads: "Black cattle in a neighboring pasture stared mutely at Colleen from behind a wire fence. They look depressed, she thought, then turned her face towards the trees that grew beside the reservoir.
She wished she could have stayed at home and wandered through the woods by the creek near her house that day, or curled up with a good book, wandering through a story. Most of all, she wished she could have just been left alone.
As she gazed at the shadowy forest that seemed to call to her, she thought she saw a dark figure with a pale face standing at its edge, but she blinked and it was gone.
Her mind was playing tricks again."

The concept of my MG novel, The Braided Thread, began with my obsession with a winter queen/witch archetype in fairy tales. She's usually portrayed as malevolent. But I wanted to write a story where she is powerful, certainly, but benevolent, instead. #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Unlike Section 28, these rules are spread across a myriad of documents, which will make it harder for LGBTQIA+ groups to fight to overturn their harmful impacts Read our full analysis 👇
Section 28 2.0 begins
Children in England are back at school, in a new era of strict rules on what teachers can say about LGBTQIA+ identities.
Schools have begun implementing guidance and curricula which require them to segregate Trans+ pupils, while teachers are banned from “encouraging” pupils from ‘questioning their gender’. Many view the new rules as directly parallel to Section 28, the now-revoked law that banned schools and local authorities from “promoting” gay identities until 2003.

The most popular books in my Middle School were Flowers in the Attic, Cujo, and It. I tried to read War and Peace in the 7th grade. But I wasn't normal. We studied Greek mythology (talk about racy and violent) and Edgar Allen Poe (a murdered corpse under the floorboards) in class that year.

Streams appear in my book many times. In this snippet, Colleen has just achieved something she has never done before -- walking for six whole miles. She and her guide, Old Kay, finally reach a stream, only to discover something of a surprise on the other side. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Text reads: "Colleen’s feet and legs were sore and weary, and she was thirsty and hungry, but she was also proud of making it so far. Catching the sweet smell of burning wood, she hoped they’d soon find themselves beside a campfire, eating something freshly grilled.
"Can I drink the water?" she whispered.
Kay shook her head. "Wait ‘til we get to the spring. It isn't far."
Finally, they came to a point where a narrow stream flowed into the lake. On its other side, the land was flat, except for a small ridge on the lakeshore where a thin column of smoke curled above the trees.
A roughly dugout canoe lay on the opposite side of the stream. And a man, who was small, muscular, brown, and nearly naked, was wading into the water beside it."

Writing is the medium that works best for me for self-expression. While I enjoy other creative pursuits as well, writing helps me process things and communicate them, which is very good for my mental health.

how about some good news: new cat just dropped!!!!
a photo of a small, spotted wild cat, with orange fur and brown circular markings, staring up with big golden eyes.Meet the First New Cat Species Discovered in 100 Years

A small, spotted tiger cat from Bolivia may just be the beginning of a wave of new small cat species.

This 10-year-old male tiger cat is the first of his species (named Leopardus tilcayo) known to science. He is approximately 18 inches from head to end of body and weighs only 3 pounds, making him smaller than the average domestic cat. This video was captured at the Senda Verde Animal Refuge in Bolivia’s Yungas region, where he currently resides.

This is my cat, Poppy. She is very cute and very sweet. She also loves it when I bring anything into the house from the garden. Flowers in a vase are usually for hiding behind, as if she was in the jungle. They might also get nibbled. Vegetables and fruit, however, are definitely toys. #Wholesome

Colleen and Eafah travel through wilderness during most of the book, so there are moments when they are focused on the tasks of surviving -- building fires, making shelters, finding food and water. For Eafah this isn't extraordinary, but for Colleen it is part of what she learns on her journey.
