I tend to click away in disgust when an “article” on the @nytimes.com is a video or conversation. If I want a podcast, I know where to go. Somehow the irony seems lost on them this morning with this one. Subhead: “Welcome to the postliterate era.” Podcast-lite instead of interesting read.

The first three chapters of “Life After” are out with a few readers for feedback. It’s utterly terrifying, not least of all because I do genuinely think I’ve figured out a unique point of view on how to rebuild a life after something has gone wrong.

I spent part of the morning working on revising Ch 3, whilst the breeze kept me lightly swinging in my hammock before the rising temperature forced me inside. My Apple Watch complimented me on starting my day with more activity than usual, giving me undue credit for propelling the hammock. Love it.

A good life needs three things in balance: Purpose: work bigger than you Duty: what you owe the people who rely on you Self: not bubble baths, the work of becoming someone worth relying on Alone, each curdles. Purpose into martyrdom. Duty into bitterness. Self into, well. You know that person.

Endless entertainment in the palm of a hand with no effort or human connection required to waste thousands of hours in numbing behaviour (see here doomscrolling) can’t possibly be a part of this, right? Last year, sitting around the high school cafeteria table, my daughter could easily spot (/2)

Here's what I learned on Friday night: if you have a heart and/or live with someone with a heart, make sure you have aspirin in an easy to reach place. Everyone is fine, but, for a little while there at around 3:45 am, it looked like my husband might be having a heart attack.

"I currently identify as an only surviving child, but that is not strictly speaking the truth." I wrote this line of my new book at some point last month. One of the crazy things about writing non-fiction about an in-progress life is that the story can change rapidly.

Today, the British press drove Jason Arday to take his life. Just like it drove Caroline Flack to take hers. They’ll show some pretend remorse and back off for a while but it won’t be long until it happens again. Our press isn’t capable of regulating itself. It’s time to enact Leveson 2.

When you find yourself in Target on a Saturday in August with a cart full of notebooks, pencils, towels, hangers and suddenly a pink mini-fridge seems like a good idea, it becomes a bit more real that the kid is off to university later this month!!! I am not ready for this.

We made the self the highest thing in the room. Duty, at its best, is not obedience or martyrdom. It is the part of love that does not depend on mood. A life gets too small when demands consume it, and also when nothing is left worth being faithful to. #Purpose

When people say "AI took" their jobs, it's not quite that straightforward. But when AI makes buying your about to be college freshman the laptop they need that bit more unaffordable, I can easily imagine the tone of discussion about the downsides of AI getting more personal. And emotional.
