Next: a full route-by-route comparison against Rails. And for Mastodon, following @intertwingly.net 's advice, the new Futamura target, keep Rails and the gems, then profile and specialize the hot spots.

Compiling a real production @rzilient_club Rails API into a single native binary with #roundhouse + #Spinel (AOT Ruby → C): it now builds, boots and serves, with responses checked field by field against Rails. Along the way: 69 PRs merged into roundhouse and 31 Spinel bugs filed (all 31 fixed).

What a time to contribute to open source 🔥 Agentic setup: point an agent at my Rails API, run it through roundhouse → spinel, get a native binary, report every issue it hits upstream and visualize it all on a custom dashboard locally, crazy

If you're turning a Rails app into a single native binary with roundhouse + Spinel, this agent skill is for you 🛠️ Rails → roundhouse → Spinel → C → one executable. Hit a gap? Patch it or report it upstream. www.skills.sh/eddygarcas/a...

"It compiles" and "it works" are very different milestones. We're at the first one. Ruby's ergonomics with compiled performance is worth the grind, and every blocker we hit on a real app is one fewer for the next team 💪

post-emit patches. → Answering correctly: ~3% of routes verified. The rest are untested, and many will hit a stub and raise. Biggest blockers left: - Postgres (roundhouse #91) - Dynamic dispatch and method_missing: 289 stubbed call sites across 33 modules - jbuilder views rendering empty

Status on compiling our production Rails API to native with #roundhouse + #Spinel. I'm contributing upstream as I hit issues, so here are the honest numbers. In rough percentages: → Compiling: 100%. 840 C errors down to 0 in four days. → Running unchanged: ~0%. Every build still depends on 34

Today I contributed to #roundhouse and #spinel, unthinkable for me a few years ago. Tooling from @matz.bsky.social and @intertwingly.net makes it approachable: compile my Rails API, hit an issue, report it, repeat. Now I see low-level details I couldn't (or wouldn't) before🙃

Ronny, my email→Telegram agent in Zig, now reads summaries aloud. New mail from an allow-listed sender arrives as a voice message; "summaries in Spanish" or "use john's voice" switches it from chat. Piper TTS + ffmpeg → Opus, Ollama for the summary. All local, nothing leaves the box.

Everyone's building email agents that send email. Mine refuses to. Ronny drafts, shows me, and waits. There's no send action it can reach on its own, approval is plain word-matching, not a model deciding what "yes" means. Written in Zig, local AI, Qwen, typesafe, whisper github.com/eddygarcas/r...

Not happy with python performance on the local AI email agent so I will ask to refactor everything on #Zig I see using C libraries in the future and Zig is the obvious choice

All this made me realize the potential #LocalAI has as a way to increase sovereignty, at least at the infrastructure level.

A second program watches the first and messages me if it breaks. I killed the assistant mid-run: alert within a second, back up in 15. One small paid call per request. Everything else runs on 8-year-old hardware under my desk.

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Voice needed tuning. It wrote "@" as "at" and misspelled names until I told it who I correspond with. Sending is locked down. It only replies to an email it just showed me, uses the original address, and waits for a typed yes. A misheard word shouldn't send a real email.

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Everything else stays on the machine: spam filtering, summaries, drafts and search ranking on Qwen 2.5 via Ollama. Whisper transcribes voice notes on the 3060, 13 seconds of speech in under half a second. No usage costs, and none of my email leaves the building.

So I gave that one job to Jev by @typesafeai.bsky.social . It doesn't write anything. It decides what I'm asking for and how sure it is. When it isn't sure, my assistant says so instead of guessing. It takes a fraction of a second and only sees the words I typed, never my email.
100
Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Real examples: I asked to see an email's contents and got the subject line. I asked it to send me a note saying "all ready" and it tried to add a new contact, saving nonsense into its own settings. It couldn't say "I'm not sure", so it guessed and went ahead confidently.

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The plan was to run everything locally. It didn't go smoothly. Local models are good at writing, summarizing and spotting spam. They're bad at understanding exactly what you asked for, and that's most of an assistant's job.

My AI agent email runs on a computer I already had: an i7-8086K from 2018, an RTX3060 and 32GB of RAM. bought 8086K for the cool number and overclock it but no need It watches my inbox, flags what matters, summarizes threads, finds old emails by topic, takes voice notes and drafts replies for me. 🧵

So lately I step back first. Decide what I want, spend much more time thinking about what would be most cost-efficient, and only then build the AI framework, tools and models to make it happen. Less is more.

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Anyway, although I'm fit and healthy, I'm not a young man anymore, so I've started noticing what that costs me, mostly my time, and the company's cash whenever I chase something before asking whether it actually serves what we're building.

There's a new AI model every day, and each one spawns ideas faster than I can act on them. I catch myself thinking about it 24/7, I feel like Ross: "I can't catch a break!" 😄

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
The #AI isn't fast just because it's clever. It's fast because I spent years making the pattern obvious. And now every new third-party integration is days cheaper, which is how the business grows.
000
Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
First #API connector I wrote in #Ruby took me weeks to crack, and longer to make it fast. Months of refactoring and many connectors later, the last ones took a day. Now I've turned that codebase into an agent prompt and it writes them in minutes, at the same quality.

omarchy talaia (image viewer) just went full omarchy 🎨 Colors now come straight from your live theme palette, and every toolbar icon was redrawn as a crisp custom vector glyph no more relying on whatever system icon theme happens to be installed. #omarchy #hyprland

Built Talaia (Catalan word for watchtower): crop/resize/adjust, undo/redo, fullscreen folder slideshow. I will keep working on it, mostly from the QML side to improve the UI, but it's an open project so feel free to PR. 🔗 github.com/eddygarcas/o...

Wasn't happy with the default image viewer on omarchy so I used it as an excuse to finally try Zig + QML together. Zig ⚡️has the best seamless C interop of any language, dropped stb_image.h straight into the build, zero bindings needed. Paired it with a Qt6/QML frontend.

I just want to know how crazy I can go making #omarchy plugins through the #AI agent, I'll just let myself go crazy 🤪 I don't think they are going to approve any of those in the marketplace 🤣 but I will post the results

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
A tailored workspace like #Hyprland isn't for everyone, and some of them will end up wanting something more traditional, like KDE or GNOME. My point is: let's bring in new adopters and let them decide what to do from there.
000
Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
As for the argument that one distro is being imposed on top of the others, I think that underestimates the new users. Once they start using Linux, they'll get hooked, and then they'll go looking for whatever fits them better.
100
Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
But eventually a good number of them will move over from Apple or Microsoft, and even a small correction to that imbalance is worth something. Having a third player in this market is a good thing. Still waiting on the Commodore Amiga OS comeback, of course 🙂

Eduard G.Castelló @elpatroned.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Thousands of new users are installing this distro just to see what it's about. Adoption will depend on a lot of factors, and the funnel will narrow as it goes, with plenty of exit routes along the way.

I have my views on things, and then other people attach labels to them, I don't care much. What I do believe is that attracting more users to any kind of Linux distribution will be good in the long run. I've been using Linux for the past 20 years and seeing this hype makes me happy in many ways.

Here are my takes about #omarchy and all the frenzy around it, if anyone's interested. Even though I don't want to talk about personalities, I'll say this much: I'm sure I disagree with most of the political positions held by #omarchy's creator(s), but then, I disagree with almost everyone's.

Shipped a Sony WH-CH720N plugin for #Omarchy Noise cancelling, equalizer control right from the bar, over raw Bluetooth. There's no official Linux SDK, so it speaks Sony own protocol directly.Still need to pass all the marketplace validations, but it works pretty well. github.com/eddygarcas/o...

My homage to the #amiga bouncing ball for #omarchy has been published 😅 It's just a silly project I made, but you can apply a gravity effect to it. When I play with it, I feel what my cat feels chasing the flashlight 😅 Got more ideas, like another mode that recreates Asteroids.

With a few prompts using the #omarchy agent, I got this, which I'm publishing soon. It takes all the knowledge acquired over the months and wraps it up into a nice QML plugin.

Another #omarchy plugin, this time to manage all my #kamal deployments and server provisioning. After months working with #kamal, I ended up with multiple plugins to run all the actions you can perform with it deploy, rollback, etc. It was good, but I never had a centralized app to manage them all.
