A brief return to #eloisereads because I finally read Tillie Walden’s Charity & Sylvia (and cried when I finished it, in a doctor’s waiting room). I am in the bag for Walden (go read On a Sunbeam and Spinning, do it now) and I was nervous this book would be fiddly or boring. It isn’t.

Happy belated book birthday to Stampede!, @jerroldconnors.bsky.social newest picture book and a total looney-tunes romp (complimentary).  Jerrold caught me at just the right time to make a little painting for his cow-themed gallery show to accompany Stampede!, how could I possibly say no?
Painting of a white and red-brown calf gamboling through a yellow-green field with a white and dark brown cat sitting calmly on his back.

A yellow dog is amazed looking at a poster on a pillar that says "graphic design". Below is a close up of the poster. There's a yellow dog on it at an old computer an the text above says either "graphic design is my passion" or "graphic design my is passion." It's unclear, due to the graphic design. There are several pull tabs below that just say "help."

Text reads: "I like every weird handmade poster."

The other night our smoke alarm went off for one second at like 3am. My husband found the manual and was sending me excerpts from it (because I had gone back to bed when we figured out the house wasn’t on fire.) Me, the next day: Did you laugh at my Batman joke? Josh: Not…out loud, no.
Screenshot from a text conversation. Josh has sent an excerpt from a smoke alarm manual that says “Hush (R) mode: The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every 8-10…”
I, hilariously, have messaged back an image of Hush, the Batman villain.

I'm writing a picture book about libraries right now, and it's SO FUN to basically author some pro-library, pro-literacy joy after the fucking last 3 years of fighting book bans. LIBRARIES ARE GREAT. THE PUBLIC GOOD IS GREAT. VOLUNTARY INQUIRY IS GREAT.

I've written with pencils for years, but I haven't given much thought to their manufacture. Blackwing sent me a video link showing how their pencils are made, and it's quite lovely - a step up from the typical 'how it's made' short. Now I love pencils even more :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=fow-...

ALA Annual Conference was wall-to-wall wonderful and I met many, many smart, funny, charming teachers, librarians, and publishing people. It was 100% worth doing my best impression of an extrovert but I am now very happy to take my books home and sleep for a thousand years (give or take).

I’m off to the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago this weekend! I’m not exhibiting—just scoping out some cool books and learning more about libraries—but if you’re on the floor on Saturday or Sunday, let me know. Let’s chat! Or run from signing to signing together. I’ll also be giving out stickers.
