So! I’ll have 22 miniprints (singly, as a full set, or as a 3-card draw) in person at the Boston Art Book Fair on November 13-15, and then online. I still feel a little weird about this project, like it’s an indulgence, but I’m excited for people to see (and hopefully treasure) these birds.

Except…the major arcana is so fun, and maybe they would work as mini prints? As a way to test the waters? So I continued to sneak in work time and ignore other projects. Once I decided I could print them in three colors with the wonderful @magicrockriso.bsky.social I was off and running.

And then I kept working on it, sneaking in time between freelance projects and picture book work, and ignoring very practical zine ideas, knowing that printing and selling a full deck would be a total pain. And there was no way to do anything less than a full deck, right?

Around New Years I got very into the idea of a tiny, bird-themed tarot deck. I am a baby when it comes to tarot; I like it but I don’t know much. Plus it’s 78 cards! But the idea was sticky. I made one for personal use and thought that was it.

I really love the advice that as an artist you should work on the thing you’re excited about, especially for personal projects, but what about when that thing feels…extremely silly?

Again, I cried, but I also had to exhibit some real self control to not gobble this book up in one sitting. It’s so tender, so observed, and hit me right at home in its portrayal of love and care through the joys and relentlessness of life. It’s also full of thousands of beautiful drawings.
A page titled “Home, A Sensation Felt Deeply” which shows close scenes of household objects after Charity and Sylvia return to their shared home after a long trip. The feeling of sleeping in your own bed after time away, even a nice time away.A single tiny panel that reads “But the confines and limits of her existence are still heavy” showing two women fenced by a grid of household objects (and, if I may editorialize, invisible labor).

A brief return to #eloisereads because I finally read Tillie Walden’s Charity & Sylvia (and cried when I finished it, in a doctor’s waiting room). I am in the bag for Walden (go read On a Sunbeam and Spinning, do it now) and I was nervous this book would be fiddly or boring. It isn’t.

Happy belated book birthday to Stampede!, @jerroldconnors.bsky.social newest picture book and a total looney-tunes romp (complimentary).  Jerrold caught me at just the right time to make a little painting for his cow-themed gallery show to accompany Stampede!, how could I possibly say no?

The other night our smoke alarm went off for one second at like 3am. My husband found the manual and was sending me excerpts from it (because I had gone back to bed when we figured out the house wasn’t on fire.) Me, the next day: Did you laugh at my Batman joke? Josh: Not…out loud, no.
Screenshot from a text conversation. Josh has sent an excerpt from a smoke alarm manual that says “Hush (R) mode: The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every 8-10…”
I, hilariously, have messaged back an image of Hush, the Batman villain.

I’m off to the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago this weekend! I’m not exhibiting—just scoping out some cool books and learning more about libraries—but if you’re on the floor on Saturday or Sunday, let me know. Let’s chat! Or run from signing to signing together. I’ll also be giving out stickers.

Graphic design is not my passion, but zines increasingly are. Im a featured creator at Cat Zine Fest at Cool Cat Collective. They’ll have hard copies of my zine as well as a clowder of cat zines from across the world! If you’re in Long Beach, I am jealous of you and you should swing by.

We cannot have a dog in our apartment, so I have been consoling/tormenting myself by learning to draw the most impossible dog on the planet. If I can keep the momentum up I’m hoping this will be a new zine in (realistically) 4 months.

Nothing happens at @9librariespvd.bsky.social without the people who work there. I’m delighted when I’m mistaken for a librarian (it’s the glasses and the sweaters) but I know I couldn’t do what they do: programming, outreach, building community, and making these libraries welcoming for all.

I love @9librariespvd.bsky.social Makerspace, even though I’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s on offer. I learned to laser cut, but there are sewing machines, heat presses, 3d printers, and stop-motion cameras. The Makerspace keeps it all available and accessible for everyone in Providence.

Next: games! @9librariespvd.bsky.social hosts classes and open hours for games and hobbies in their libraries across Providence. And you can borrow everything from jigsaw puzzles to video games to play at home. Books are fun, but so is Mario Kart.

My first and favorite thing about libraries is the books. Part of my job is reading picture books, but I also love to pick up a book on a whim. In the last year I’ve read incredible books and bad books and medium books, all for free, all because of @9librariespvd.bsky.social

What (do I get)? I’m so glad you asked!
I’ll send you a PDF of my brand new, not-even-printed- yet zine, Cats in Bodegas.

Since I’ve joined the board I’ve learned just how much libraries do, and especially how much CLPVD does with a very tight budget. Every donation supports staff, programming, and maintaining these libraries for everyone across Providence.
Graphic with text. This week, I’m raising money for Community Libraries of Providence.
Why? Community Libraries of Providence (CLPVD) is a system of 9 libraries. These libraries provide programming, classes, materials, and more to thousands of patrons across Providence, including me.
I’ve served on CLPVD’s board for over a year, and seen how much this system does with a limited budget. This is a chance to support these libraries and their amazing staff, so they can do even more.
How? Follow the link in my post to make any donation, then message me.
When? Just this week, March 23rd to March 30th!

And now we have a sketch! It isn’t perfect but I’m amped to keep working on it. One of the things I’ve learned (repeatedly) from writing more is that revision can crack a project open and make it exciting again, or fix problems that weren’t entirely visible. Next, eventually: color studies.

I haven’t wanted to work on this piece, despite being excited about the meaning behind it and the possible finished product. So I let the whole idea simmer and then revised it into something that I was excited to work on: a more communal, less fragmented scene.

My debut picture book, NO ROOM FOR BIRDS, is coming summer 2027 from Greenwillow Books!(!!!!!) Getting to make this book still feels so special and surreal. I hope you read it and love it, especially if you’ve ever thought about how many birds in your kitchen would be truly alarming.
Illustration preview and announcement for No Room for Birds from Publishers Weekly. The text reads:
Martha Mihalick at Greenwillow Books has bought, at auction, No Room for Birds and a second untitled picture book by debut author Eloise Narrigan. Deep in the birch woods, Guin the Goat Witch does all her important witchy work all by herself, but soon she finds she is not alone in her tidy little hut. Some bird is trying to make itself at home on her shelf, but a spell for unwelcome birds should do just the trick… right? Publication is set for summer 2027; Alexandra Levick at Writers House negotiated the deal for world rights.
