I'd personally to be terrified to go up against these french kids. I don't mean the running street battles, I mean have you heard them speak? fuck, they'll lay out the whole political history of modern france and why a breakaway left is the only solution at tiktok length unedited

"in the 5th or 6th most powerful country in the world why am I, the mayor of a city of 150,000, the one stepping up with responsibility to what the students are asking for? why is the government not doing that?" (paraphrased from very quick french)

listening to an interview and he makes a really good connection between listening to women and listening to young people when they say things are wrong: start with believing them, not by dismissing them the government of france has dismissed them, that's the fundamental failure

La France Insoumise is not fringe by the way, they're who literally held the New Popular Front together when the resurgent far-right looked likely to take power in 2024, they're the party who held back the fascists

I didn't know his name before this but he's a real one: member of La France Insoumise (to the left of the Socialists), took down Macron's portrait in the mayor's office, said elected leaders belong in the streets with the people

“No warrants are shown, as far as we can tell there’s no legal ground for them to come onto private property. It seems like they’re pushing through the construction process quickly and will deal with the law later,” said Rachel, a land defender who spoke with UR about the raids.

I'm sure that's fine, Santa Cruz / Capitola might be in for an awful winter though, places right on the Pacific and exposed to swells

it's not that the infrastructure is easy to overwhelm, it's mostly not, but everything has limits. if you put multiple atmospheric rivers that can draw on absurdly warm coastal water to drop even more rain into a short sequence things might start breaking.

aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 3h
at the same time, coastlines are going to be dealing with over a foot of sea level rise (from multiple causes aligning over the same period) compounded by winter storms it's a mild place to live except when it really really isn't

it makes for a reading experience closer to meandering, following a path opened up by each word at the end of a piece without really knowing what it will lead to

I love the structure of Thinking From Black so much, the intention of linking each by words at the end, an index woven into the pieces these are from Invitation by @keguro.blacksky.app
ill.
On the streets of Pittsburgh and Seattle and Chicago, I learned how to nod back at Black men I did not know. Those nods from strangers-casual, unexpected-invited me to imagine myself possible in those spaces. The nods acknowledged that those spaces were often hostile and isolating. But they were not angry nods. They said, "I see you. I am glad to see you." Each nod created shared ground.
iv.
And then there is ritual. A visitor is offered food and drink, thanked for their presence, invited to linger. Newborns are welcomed by older family members. Special food is prepared, blessings offered, names bestowed.
Intimate partners are introduced to friends, asked to join the collective practice of being together.Even though I want to linger in the space of the ordinary, I am also drawn to the extraordinary, to how we are invited to imagine different words and practices. Bob Marley is the first voice I remember singing freedom.
The first voice I remember inviting me to imagine freedom. So often, the seam across Africa and the Black diaspora is filled with the rhythms of people imagining freedom, the sounds that invite us to keep inventing freedom.
vii.
An invitation can be a sound or a gesture or a scent or a dance or a texture.
It might slow time long enough for you to catch your breath, cradle you so that you are not isolated in your sorrow, give you the courage to walk into unfamiliar rooms. An invitation might provide the care you need when you least expect it. An invitation might get you through a difficult period, as it points toward a time of refuge.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the 6 October massacre at Thammasat University, a major moment in modern Thai history The massacre saw state-backed right-wing groups kill at least 41 pro-democracy protestors and ended Thailand's 1973-1976 democratic period No one has ever been held responsible

Montreal is basically a two-party state (PLQ and QS) completely at odds with the rest of Quebec. That's uh, not good for long-term political and social cohesion.

in any case, PSPP's speech was about rebuilding the nation (quebec) from the ruins of 8 years of the CAQ and finding common ground for big projects, addressing the housing crisis, being eopen to ideas from the other parties, etc etc referendum later, right now we get to work, basically

I guess it's more watersheds than rivers, hence the lakes, but now that's bugging me too probably a better way to do it, but it's a cool attempt to use all that available data I think

the PLQ is the federalist party, the PQ is the sovereigntist party, which guides a lot more than whether to leave Canada or not the appetite for separatism is low, because right now being a relatively autonomous nation within the federal arrangement of Canada makes more sense
120
aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 23h
listening to PSPP's speech and I guess I'd say the focus (from outsiders) on a referendum makes it about separatism when the position the PQ takes is sovereigntist: Quebec is a national project, and independence is a goal to work towards to be decided by the population

aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
in current polls something like 66% of *francophones* in Quebec would vote no on a referendum whatever else is going on, people here feel closer to Canada (Carney polls way higher than any provincial leader) than to the US or any version of going it alone

aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
also like, the contemporary PQ aside, Quebec has an actual historical engagement with revolution and demands for self-governance, and the PQ did take that and build a progressive modern democratic socialist state it has taken really ugly turns but that still happened

aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
the referendums were born of a different time and cost them ever winning most of the ridings around Montreal (half the population of Quebec or so) again the *current stance* of PSPP is "when Trump's gone, we'll see"
162
aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
the PQ having a baseline party stance that Quebec should pursue independence is so little like whatever the fuck is happening in Alberta that the comparison isn't worth making even as a joke

aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
all the articles are going to be "separatist party wins" and just cannot underline enough how much no one here really cares about that right now, including the PQ

minority, all I'm asking for at this depressing time made more depressing by the fact that it's not like a PLQ government would be any better
150
aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
the PLQ gets more votes for opposing separatism than the PQ does by being nominally for it on principle the PLQ is also consistently corrupt and everyone learns this again every time they get in power
000
aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
you'd just be amazed how little holding a referendum has to do with electing the natural governing party who built the modern quebec state and all its institutions, thus operating as the default for a lot of people
110
aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I hate that the PQ has made itself so obnoxiously shitty that I'm hoping for PLQ wins

it adds to the insult that PSPP's riding is here, given how much he and the contemporary PQ stand against everything cosmopolitan and good about cities like montreal
2226
aaron boothby @ellipticalnight.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
still early but can already say for sure that the governing party in quebec will have very few seats in the montreal metro area and this has been the case for a while half the population of the province, cultural and economic engine, hoping for a minority government to maybe at least have a say
