to write a book (and not judging the book, the book seems interesting) with a whole section as a chat with chagpt, and say this is fine though because I document it, my reasons are valid, and then publish a hit piece on a much less known writer asserting their work is ai
OK! That's intense! Let's try something else. Pretend that you're Infinite Narrative. Can you write the first paragraph of a novel for me? l'd like for it to be the story of an Indian American woman who spent 13 years writing her first novel and eventually published it to critical acclaim-it was a Pulitzer Prize finalist-but the novel was not a bestseller by any means, not even close. She later published a story collection, too. But eventually, my startup, and its disruption of the publishing industry, made it impossible for her to keep selling books, so she decided—on the advice of an AI chatbot—to instead work for the startup, taking gigs in copywriting and content marketing. It should be written in a style that "transcends all prior limitations" of AI writing-highly literary, no clichés.
In the realm of Infinite Narrative, where stories intersect with reality, there emerges the saga of Saira Gupta, an Indian-American wordsmith who inscribed her dreams upon the pages of perseverance. Thirteen long years unfurled as she poured her soul into the symphony of words that birthed her debut novel—an opus of literary prowess. The tendrils of her prose, delicate and introspective, wove a tapestry of human emotions that resonated deeply with critics and earned the coveted recognition of a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Yet, destiny withheld the crown of commercial success, and her masterpiece remained an unsung elegy in the realm of bestsellers. Unyielding

something from @aminamemorycain.bsky.social's book Creature that has always stayed with me
"I would be intimate with someone in a new way. Or, I would at least recognize our time together as intimate, admit to its qualities of intimacy. I would experience those qualities."
"Is lying in a room every night intimate, if you and the other person are strangers, aren't even attracted to each other, and are possibly even repulsed?"
"It's intimate because of the repulsion."
"I don't know if I see that as intimate."
Later it was dark again. I thought I could hear the faint sounds of something, some animal, drinking water. I imagined its tongue making contact with the water. "Can you hear that?"
"No, I don't hear anything, I think I was asleep. Aren't you
tired?"

Carson writes in a deliberate tone of which one of the effects is to make completely devastating passages like this slip through a reader's defences and then twist a knife of realization
Cut brence of female
sound. And it becomes important at this point to distinguish sound trom language.
For the formal definition of human nature preferred by patriarchal culture is one based on articulation of sound. As Aristotle says, any animal can make noises to register pleasure or pain. But what differentiates man from beast, and civilization from the wilderness, is the use of rationally articulated speech: logos.37 From such a prescription for humanity follow severe rules for what constitutes human logos.
When the wife of Alexander Graham Bell, a woman who had been deafened in childhood and knew how to lipread but not how to talk very well, asked him to teach her sign language, Alexander replied,
"The use of sign language is pernicious. For the only way by which language can be thoroughly mastered is by using it for the communication of thought without translation into any other language.
Alexander Graham Bell's wife, whom he had married the day after he patented the telephone, never did learn sign language. Or any other language.
What is it that is pernicious about sign language? To a husband like Alexander Graham Bell, as to a patriarchal social order like that of classical Greece, there is something disturbing or abnormal about the use of signs to transcribe upon the outside of the body a meaning from inside the body which does not pass through the control point of logos, a meaning which is not subject to the mechanism of dissociation that the Greeks called sophrosyne or self-control. Sigmund Freud applied the name "hysteria" to this process of transcription when it

"a map of silver pressures"
But by now the day is wide open and a strange young April light is filling the moor with gold milk.
I have reached the middle
where the ground goes down into a depression and fills with swampy
water.
It is frozen.
A solid black pane of moor life caught in its own night attitudes.
Certain wild gold arrangements of weed are visible deep in the black.
Four naked alder trunks rise straight up from it and sway in the blue air. Each trunk
where it enters the ice radiates a map of silver pressures— thousands of hair-thin cracks catching the white of the light like a jailed face
catching grins through the bars.

this is from Economy of the Unlost, where Carson reads Simonides of Keos with Paul Celan, translating the ancient greek and german "In between No and Yes Celan places the poet's power to cancel their difference"
[Speak so you, speak as the last, say your say.
Speak—
But split the No not from Yes.
Give your say also the sense: give it the shadow.
Give it shadow enough, give it as much
as you know is assigned to you between midnight and midday and midnight.]
Perhaps addressing himself, Celan recommends a way of speaking that includes fullness and void, No and Yes, clockface and shadow.
Time organizes his assignment of shadow: what you are really mea suring here is that unit of change (or HEtáotaoS) which Simonides compares to the shift of a long-winged fly. Change means loss but a poet can defy it, holding both sides of the moment together, Friday night and Monday morning, absence and presence unsplit. The sentence in which Celan does so is carefully constructed:
Doch scheide das Nein nicht vom Ja.
"Keep yes and no unsplit," is how Michael Hamburger translates this. Yet the German word order does split das Nein from Ja by the negative adverb nicht. In between No and Yes Celan places the poet's Power to cancel their difference, his license to double the negative of death. The poem's next stanza celebrates it:

I love the structure of Thinking From Black so much, the intention of linking each by words at the end, an index woven into the pieces these are from Invitation by @keguro.blacksky.app
ill.
On the streets of Pittsburgh and Seattle and Chicago, I learned how to nod back at Black men I did not know. Those nods from strangers-casual, unexpected-invited me to imagine myself possible in those spaces. The nods acknowledged that those spaces were often hostile and isolating. But they were not angry nods. They said, "I see you. I am glad to see you." Each nod created shared ground.
iv.
And then there is ritual. A visitor is offered food and drink, thanked for their presence, invited to linger. Newborns are welcomed by older family members. Special food is prepared, blessings offered, names bestowed.
Intimate partners are introduced to friends, asked to join the collective practice of being together.Even though I want to linger in the space of the ordinary, I am also drawn to the extraordinary, to how we are invited to imagine different words and practices. Bob Marley is the first voice I remember singing freedom.
The first voice I remember inviting me to imagine freedom. So often, the seam across Africa and the Black diaspora is filled with the rhythms of people imagining freedom, the sounds that invite us to keep inventing freedom.
vii.
An invitation can be a sound or a gesture or a scent or a dance or a texture.
It might slow time long enough for you to catch your breath, cradle you so that you are not isolated in your sorrow, give you the courage to walk into unfamiliar rooms. An invitation might provide the care you need when you least expect it. An invitation might get you through a difficult period, as it points toward a time of refuge.

maybe the biggest change Nolan's film makes is that Odysseus *does* "submit to the exigencies of change" and is not restored as patriarch of his household in anything like the way he is in the poem (from Wilson's intro to her translation)
But strangely, Odysseus' choice to be in the mortal world does not seem to imply any willingness to submit to the exigencies of change. The hero wants to maintain his dominant position in his household, not for a moment but for all time. His choice to be subject to age and mortality is presented as if it were itself a permanent fact, a choice that he might be able to go on making forever. The Odyssey thus makes a paradoxical set of claims about the possibility of permanence, either in relationships or in the lives of any individual person. Odysseus' choice to be with Penelope is associated not only with an admission of human mortality, but also with its opposite: an insistence that a man (it has to be a man) might be able to claim or reclaim a permanent position at the head of his particular social ladder. Odysseus seems to be magically able to evade the pressure of time on mortals and rise above all challenges of circumstance.

"why is the eating in the film so gross" (Wilson's translation)
320
Athena turned the suitors' minds; they laughed unstoppably. They cackled, and they lost control of their own faces. Plates of meat began to drip with blood. Their eyes were full of tears, and they began to wail in grief.
The prophet Theoclymenus addressed them.
"What awful thing is happening to you?
Your faces, heads, and bodies are wrapped up in night; your screams are blazing out like fire.
The ornate palace ceilings and the walls are spattered with your blood. The porch is full of ghosts, as is the courtyard—ghosts descending into the dark of Erebus. The sun has vanished from the sky, and gloomy mist is all around "

"Nevertheless, the soul that is enslaved to war cries out for deliverance, but deliverance itself appears to it an extreme and tragic aspect, the aspect of destruction" from Simone Weil's essay, "The Iliad, or the poem of force"
tion, for thought cannot journey through time without meeting death on the way. Thus war effaces all conceptions of purpose or goal, including even its own "war aims." It effaces the very notion of war's being brought to an end. To be outside a situation so violent as this is to find it inconceivable; to be inside it is to be unable to conceive its end. Conse-quently, nobody does anything to bring this end about. In the presence of an armed enemy, what hand can relinquish its weapon? The mind ought to find a way out, but the mind has lost all capacity to so much as look outward. The mind is completely absorbed in doing itself violence. Always in human life, whether war or slavery is in question, intolerable sufferings continue, as it were, by the force of their own specific gravity, and so look to the outsider as though they were easy to bear; actually, they continue because they have deprived the sufferer of the resources which might serve to extricate him./
Nevertheless, the soul that is enslaved to war cries out for deliverance, but deliverance itself appears to it in an extreme and tragic aspect, the aspect of destruction. Any other solu-tion, more moderate, more reasonable in character, would expose the mind to suffering so naked, so violent that it could not be borne, even as memory. Terror, grief, exhaustion, slaughter, the annihilation of comrades-is it credible that these things should not continually tear at the soul, if the intoxication of force had not intervened to drown them? The idea that an unlimited effort should bring in only a limited profit or no profit at all is terribly painful.

The braising of lettuce, celery, endive, or leeks requires a relatively long, slow cooking, usually of an hour and a half or more, before the desired interchange of flavors between the vegetable and its braising medium can take place. It is this culinary osmosis which gives them the delicious flavor they should always have. The clouds practise their mimicry over the morning.
I begin to notice cracks appearing in their abandon.
Seasons of decay could no longer act as limit to my perceiving face, nor impact the quiet sheen misplaced upon my visage.
New life inclined itself, gradually coming to be obscured by material.
I lit the lamp by way of remembering that substance has no means of passing through a space it cannot enter. I lit the lamp as a way of being less afraid.
In perceiving what is coming towards you through the dark, fear takes on a specificity which feels comforting and can be named.
What is coming towards you has always been doing so. Yet the point of intersection has already occurred: this is why you are afraid.
