A lot of the matches widely considered the best WWF matches of the 90s - Austin/Bretx2, Bret/Owen, Savage/Warrior, Bret/Dave, Shawn/Razor etc are IC or non-title matches. So I was wondering... What are your Top 5 WWF World Title Matches of the 90s?

For those not familiar with Charles' work, he's doing an amazing job chronicling pro wrestling through the medium of "footage," using the text itself and available contextual sources to create maybe the most coherent and comprehensive history of pro wrestling ever. Give it a look.

It can’t be undersold just how good The Shield actually was. I mean this wholeheartedly, one of the greatest year runs any act has had this century. Not only were they over as hell, they were having fantastic matches every single week. They helped keep a sinking ship afloat. Transcendent trio.

In 1990, Warrior was laughed at in the ring by the Japanese crowd as he defended against Dibiase. In 1991, he made sure no one was going to laugh at him. If you only see one minute out of his entire career, this is the minute. Plus, an all time bit of bumping from Sarge.

It's almost shocking how great Hogan was as a worker given his reputation among "smart" fans. It's easy to find good/great matches and performances. Finding outright bad ones is trickier. They exist but there aren't nearly as many as people who don't actually watch the matches suggest

Here's my (relatively) quick DVDVR review of the Inoki vs Saito Island Death Match. Note that the WON thought this was basically the worst thing ever at the time even if NJPW fans in Japan voted it the match of the year.
(1) I don't have the words to do it justice but it accomplishes so much with so little, with time, setting, and effort driving it all.

The match is fairly self-evident. Either you're going to get it or you're not going to get it and I can't make you not get it if you don't. You have to take a leap of faith, have to give in something of yourself, have to put in some level of effort, have to ride the wave and channel what they're feeling. The match is exhausting; it was for them it is for you as a viewer. If I understand the translation well enough, we come in at around the 30 minute mark and they'd just been posturing. There's a shot of Inoki groundhogging his head out of his tent as Saito waits in the ring. Once they get going, Saito goes for the Scorpion immediately and Inoki blocks it and tries for a UWF leglock. Saito is bloodied up from his mouth early and it adds a mood to everything almost from the get go. From there, things remain hotly contested but with simple, grinding holds. There are some patterns, such as Saito getting a hold and Inoki getting a reversal, again and again. There are times that Inoki escapes a hold by simply working his way around the ring. This is a battle of attrition, more so than probably any pro wrestling match since the 1930s. (2) Time passes. Night falls. They light the torches. Everything is so grueling and every tiny advantage is made to mean so much over time. Whenever they build to a high moment, like Inoki pulling Saito over the ring or Saito trying to force Inoki into the fire and crashing into it himself instead, it's a huge deal. Saito gets a modified version of his prison lock on and Inoki charges him on the outside, desperate to make up the advantage. That leads to the moment I captured, where Saito takes advantage due to Inoki's desperation but he's putting so much into containing and stetching Inoki. It's almost like lucha matwork where they can hold on for as long as they can but if they can't get some sort of win (and the only way to win is to escape to a certain part of the island), then they have to let go. They escalate to suplexes, but slowly, steadily, one and then a long gap of holds again, but towards the end, Inoki starts to really gain an advantage with Knuckle Arrows and all the rest. Saito starts to backpeddle. It feels inevitable. But then he grabs a piece of wood from the ground and blasts Inoki and it's legitimately shocking because this has all been violence and battle but this is a different sort. It's beyond the pale. It's crossing a line. Inoki blades hard. The two of them are covered in dirt, covered in blood, and Saito is unrelenting. Inoki is Inoki however. He powers back, chokes Saito out, and marches his way to freedom as they put Saito on a stretcher and bring him back to his tent.

This opening to Hogan vs Piper from The War to Settle the Score feels like a moment sort of lost to history, but the bit with Mr. T and then Hogan rushing right in and throwing hands with Piper as the theme is still playing, comes off like the most dynamic thing that happened in the entire WWF era.

86-88 NJPW Takada is basically the Dean Malenko of UWF-in-NJPW and I mean that in the worst way you can imagine. The thriving, gripping, writhing soul of pro wrestling does not escape into reality through that man's face, and whatever it is, stoicism it is not, so that's not an out for him.

I figure everyone gets a couple of strikes here and I choose to use them on this, the thing that got the account KO'd on the other place. It's a great piece of business, Andre getting a foot up on his own partner to save himself and then basing for a Maeda dive! People should be allowed to see it.

One of the greatest, most shocking moments in wrestling history, the start of Baba/Rusher vs Tenryu/Hansen from 11/29/89. Not a single person in that crowd had any idea this was coming. The pageantry of the Real World Tag League shattered by a chaotic revolutionary.
