A great description I've heard of the stock market is that it's a mood ring for rich people. The investor class seems to have latched onto a handful of key things like AI and seem to feel comfortable ignoring the rest. It's bizarre

Maybe you could harvest the excess heat generated by your phone as it processes the unhelpful replies you're getting and use it to drive some sort of Stirling engine or heat pump

Midst all the celebration about Hungary. Yes! Voting is a powerful tool! But only if you have someone to vote for. A Yellow Dog Democrat still loses if there isn't even a yellow dog to vote for.

A weird thing about rich people is that they only ever want to spend other people's money. If he spent his own, he'd be less rich! Can't have that

A digitally drawn homage to the George Herriman comic strip Krazy Kat. Starting left of frame we see yellow Ignatz Mouse having just thrown a brick which is sailing across the center of the frame and in another instant will bash the oblivious Krazy Kat (a blue bipedal cartoon cat wearing a red scarf) in the back of the head as he walks innocently to the right. Everything is drawn in rough black pen and colored in pale washes. A speech bubble from Ignatz reads ‘Maybe it will…’, the word ’Happen’ appears in the whooshing trail of the sailing brick, and a final speech bubble belonging to the Kat reads ‘…Today’.

It would be cool to have a legislature that acted to defend its own constitutional prerogatives and, maybe as a treat, the interests of the people it represents too.

I think there are a lot of fundamental problems with humanoid robots and I doubt we'll see useful ones in my lifetime. But there could very well be useless & silly ones in the next decade or so, and Musk has the advantage of an apparently endless stream of cash from surprisingly dim major investors

It's also a reflection of their wishful thinking about the "strong floor" - that various classes (women, unions, Hispanics, etc) will automatically vote for them, so there's no point doing anything to keep that vote - gotta go after your racist uncle instead

Not being even vaguely sarcastic: At some point, a journalist needs to ask Johnson “you regularly claim you have no idea what your own government is doing. If we take you at your word, how are you so poorly informed, and do you this level of ignorance should disqualify you as speaker?”

On the plus side, the darts that ICE keeps throwing at Chicago PD could end up driving a wedge between the two. Keeping local PD more firmly on the side of the local government is probably helpful

Legit curious if a notable number of users actually asked for AI anything. Having to sift through about:config to turn off obscure settings isn't really the same as having a choice, especially if the settings get changed back if some MBA decides usage isn't high enough.

I want every ICE agent identified & shunned for the rest of their lives by civil society. I want people to cross the street when they approach. I want restaurants to refuse them service. I want their families to think twice about being seen with them. I want them to die alone & sad.

To me the important question is "how do we shepherd useful candidates through the system to victory in the next 2 elections" - today's democratic party isn't doing it. A splinter republican party would be a big help. Without that, in 3.5 years the election is more of a formality.

the big disconnect that happens here is between the correct message for D politicians (especially in red states), which is “you’re right, this isn’t who you are, you’re better than that, vote differently next time” and the actual truth, which is yes you did, fuck you

In an ideal world we might be better prepared for remote learning, too. I think the primary reason it went so badly for so many students is that we really just didn't know how to do remote learning at this scale. Now we have some data, at least.
