The applications system is often poorly managed in prisons. Paper applications get lost in piles of requests, and prisoners don’t always get enough time to use electronic kiosks.

Around 15% can use tablets or laptops to make applications, but some prisons cap the number and the length of requests, which limits their effectiveness.

Our report ‘Easier said than done: resolving prisoner requests’, published today, reveals how hard it is for prisoners to get basic things done in jail. Read the report: hmiprisons.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmipris_repo... And media release: hmiprisons.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/news/inabili...
Prisoners rely almost entirely on staff to manage their everyday requests, either through informal conversations or by submitting formal, written ‘applications’.

But staff shortages and inexperience can mean prisoners do not always get the help they need. This can lead to frustration and poor behaviour.
