Do epidemiologists & biostatisticians experience confusion from leadership at their academic instituions as to why there would need to be professors in epi or biostats? It seems as though these professions are seen as paid staff to just wrangle data for clinicians in some places. #epiSky

Here’s the latest from us on #sarcoidosis. Kidney stones are associated with a future risk of sarcoidosis. It’s one of several factors that signal preclinical or undiagnosed disease and supports that the preclinical phase of sarcoidosis could be many years before diagnosis for some patients.

Abstract. A recent news article suggested observational studies confuse correlation and causation. Such confusion often arises from unclear research aims r

Here's our most recent work: Sarcoidosis can become chronic or it can resolve, and the reasons for why patients get one type vs. the other are unclear. In this project we used data-driven methods to identify trajectories of patients over two years and predictors for these trajectories.

Forgive me, epi colleagues, for I have sinned... I did what the reviewer wanted and wrote in "not statistically signficant" everywhere they wanted me to. They broke me down after 3 rounds of review. I did, however, refuse to adjust for mediators.

It’s a little odd that people call the assistant professor positions open at KI ”tenure track” - but maybe I don’t understand what tenure track means. After 6 years you could get a ”permanent” position- but if you don’t have your own funding at that point you’re out of a job.

Woke up to another request from a reviewer to adjust for what they call confounders but what are obviously mediators. I’m dying by a thousand cuts! so tired of teaching epidemiology to anonymous overconfident reviewers in online forms. 😭

Enjoyed the talk by @mattpfox.bsky.social at Karolinska @ki.se today on intuition in epidemiology. We sometimes have a good ”gut feeling” but sometimes it can lead us astray. How do we teach students better?

The presentation was a success! I started off with "isn't epidemiology just having a dataset and pushing a button? - Nope!" and went from there. They appreciated the talk and I got a lot of questions that showed genuine interest and understanding of the value of epidemiological expertise.

What is the point of a letter of intent? Mine (2 pgs) was rejected & the reviewer said that the details of the plan were not clear.... How many details for a project are expected in a 2 page LOI?!? Or is this just an excuse for the reviewer to tank a project that they didn't like?

I enjoyed the Hanna Hirsch Pauli exhibit at the Swedish National Museum today. A little inspiration and beauty to brighten up the day. This painting was considered controversial at the time (1886) because of how the subject was depicted and what that implied about women’s roles and behavior.
