Humanities research is getting squeezed by this shrinking of the pool of those whose working conditions allow any time for research at all and increasing their teaching loads whenever and however possible. This makes even scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching increasingly high bars.

Yes, and part of what’s been happening on the teaching front is that administrators are realizing they can increase the profit margins on humanities gen ed if they close majors outright or just let them dwindle away by never funding replacement lines, just hiring contingent faculty.
