My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)

The GOP is obsessed with erasing trans people, their voices, and their stories. This is a FOUR ALARM fire, with the now fourth book banning bill introduced in Congress this year. If you're fighting about HR 7616 and HR 2616 and the CHARLIE Act, you need to know S 4925 is happening, too.

I went into a fugue state and cartooned my feelings at reading this passage. I have floppy dark hair and round glasses. My head is tilted back, my mouth wide open, steam billowing out of it looking like a smoke stack. Mr Darcy’s words hang prominently around me.

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

30 Days of Pride Books Day 29: Kiss & Tell by Adib Khorram This is a really different setting and concept from the author's Darius books, but Kiss & Tell still has the sweet character moments and thoughtful, complicated relationships I was hoping for.
Cover of Kiss & Tell by bestselling author of Darius the Great Is Not Okay Adib Khorram. Tagline: "Nobody can tell you how to be queer in the spotlight." Four members of a boyband face away, singing towards a huge crowd, while Hunter, a red-haired white boy, crouches behind them, blushing sheepishly.

30 Days of Pride Books Day 27: Each of Us a Gift by Mark Oshiro I've read Mark's book & TV reviews for years but had never read any of their novels. And wow I loved this story about the power of community, stories, & connecting with the natural world. It is dark and painful and very full of love.
Each of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro, author of Anger Is a Gift. A large white-to-orange gradient circle (it could be the sun or the moon) against a deep blue-green sky. In front is an orange and red mountain, with a shadow down the middle that forms the silhouette of a feminine face in profile.

30 Days of Pride Books Day 25: On a Sunbeam by Tilly Walden A graphic novel set in outer space, among ancient ruins, in a strict boarding school, and on a mysterious, nearly inaccessible world.
On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden. "Tillie Walden is the future of comics, and On a Sunbeam is her best work yet. It's a 'space' story unlike any you've ever read, with a rich, lived-in universe of complex characters." -Brian K. Vaughan, Saga and Paper Girls. Against a black background with teal and white stars, a girl with dark hair looks out of a window surrounded by sci-fi tech-looking panels.

30 Days of Pride Books Day 21: the Willowweep Manor series by Shaenon K. Garrity & Christopher Baldwin A gothic romance megafan finds herself in a pocket universe governed by the tropes of her favorite genre... with occasional incursions from other genres to keep her on her toes.
2 book covers, The Dire Days of Willowweep Manor & The Nefarious Nights of Willowweep Manor, by Shaenon K Garrity & Christopher Baldwin. Each cover illustration shows a Black woman and a white man in period attire, with a large gothic manor house behind them under a night sky with a full moon. In "Dire Days," they are fighting off a herd of bunnies with glowing green eyes, our heroes armed only with an umbrella and a small knife. In "Nefarious Nights," the heroine holds a magnifying glass and the hero struggles to hold onto a stack of books as the two of them, flanked by a cheerful dog and chicken, stumble upon a dead body. Yes, these books are very silly.

Lunar Boy, story and art by Jes and Cin Wibowo. A white-haired boy in a white and blue school uniform sits atop a pile composed of odds and ends from everyday life--a smartphone, a camera, a book, a backpack, a bowl of noodles... The blue and pink sky, with a vast white moon, evokes the transgender pride flag. Silver Stonewall Book Award sticker in the corner.

Day 9: Coven by Jennifer Dugan & Kit Seaton Maybe I read this in one sitting the other day. Because it didn’t have chapter breaks. But I liked the character designs, and the story kept me hooked throughout! I don’t know if the creators plan to make sequels, but I hope they do.
Book cover, COVEN, a graphic novel, by Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton. A young white woman in a red jacket and ripped jeans is generating flames from her hands while her long brown hair swirls dramatically behind her. In the background are several shadowy figures.
