I usually suck at reaching out first and mostly kept my mouth shut here, so don't feel awkward about asking even if we weren't actively talking. I've also got a volunteer shift starting now, so my replies will be pretty delayed.

People not learning there lesson mere weeks after the Ren shit came out is why I deactivated, and god, I'm about to do it again after less than a day. (and I'm largely back just to say "find me elsewhere") I did not miss seeing (often baseless) drama almost daily over the past 3 months.

Exactly! There's a very short list of things that are Morally Correct To Pirate, but that doesn't include indie authored/published books. And I sure as hell wouldn't tell the creator. "Oh, you liked my work enough to tell me, but not to make sure I get paid? Cool, guess I'll starve"

I'm 100% down for calling both people out, but I don't want the echo guy to get away unscathed by having all the blame pinned on the Memoria dev instead. Especially since he'll still be collecting data until the next breaking dalamud update.

Beyond that, their writing styles seem pretty different (sorry that these screenshots are out of order and all over the place). That and the memoria dev, Rose, while somewhat set in his ways, showed transparency and made changes. Even formed a rapport with people who came in displeased with him.

100% agreed that the person who made it should be called out, but idk, things really aren't adding up for me. I think the dev's github got taken down, since it 404s. I privated my github profile and you can still reach it and see the one (forked) repo I have (I'll DM it to you, if you want to see).

Idk, the whole thing is ridiculous. "Oh but fanfic is free! Even some stories that are fully OCs in a unique universe!" Ok great, I could do my job for free, too. And I have done so in the past! But that sure as hell doesn't mean I'd just give away my services willy-nilly

100% agreed. I don't get how writers get even less respect than almost any other kind of artist. Books aren't even that expensive, all things considered?? Like people somehow forgot all about how much effort it took them to do a single report and can't extend that to a full book.

Again, not defending or saying they couldn't be the same, but I very much worry that the guy who made it is taking advantage of the situation to throw people off his trail

fwiw they very well could have downloaded the memoria website's source code from github to yoink the UI from it. Of course, I didn't save a copy of the memoria repo while it was up, but even the the decompiled source looks pretty different. I'd have expected more re-use if they were the same.

Taking a quick look through, I don't see anything that specifically calls them out as being the same besides this, which is honestly pretty weak evidence unless his character was the very first scan But I'll take a closer look through

It's just... Idk, this feels like one of those "there's a convenient scapegoat we can sic the community on" situations that comes up when people are pissed and calling for blood.

I'd like to see where they're getting the evidence that it's the same guy, tbh. I really don't think it's the same one at all. The Memoria dev was ultimately receptive to feedback and seemed way more out of touch than malicious. Apparently the Echo guy wasn't, and so much of it reeks of malice.

Is there actual evidence that it's the same guy? I'm not trying to defend either one of them, but it and the dev's attitude didn't exactly scream "made by the same guy" to me. But I also didn't have time to join the echo server on a burner and lurk like I did with the memoria one.

I'm also against paid xiv, etc. mods, even though I get where they're coming from with regards to time/resources spent making them. But at the end of the day, making money off of SE's IP without consent puts SE in a tough spot, which endangers all mods if, say, SE's trademarks come into question.

Good god that's heinous. Authors deserve to be paid for their creative efforts. It's one thing if it's a big company, as pirates are significantly less likely to buy. But an independent creator with reasonably-priced books/art/whatever? THAT is far more likely to be a lost sale.

Also libraries exist, many with digital collections for those who can't go in person??? And you can often request that they add things to their collections? Or use interlibrary loan? Regardless, like you said, don't go bragging about it, especially to the author??? That's just entitlement.

It seems people are often afraid of liking their own art work due to the worry of being perceived as egotistical or conceited, but you can still love your work and have a huge driving force behind that acting as a love for learning and improving. You can be proud and seek joy while you grow.

just don't download closed source plugins period I'd say avoid anything off the official repo unless you know what you're downloading. At least don't add custom repos that haven't been effectively vetted
