I also think that, in the age of theorycrafting, people keep inventing versions of shows or movies in their heads and being disappointed when it turns out different than their headcanon version.

All of this to say that people need to calm the hell down and actually take in the story that's being told before complaining that "they fucked up the lore" or whatever. Worldbuilding is good but always second to what the author is trying to say with their story.

100

Turnip @elementalturnip.bsky.social · 6h

Unfortunately, a lot of the fans complaining about this will never understand what makes these characters and stories truly compelling. It isn't the superpowers. It isn't the fights. It's the themes, the deeper meanings of the story, and the way the characters act and react.

Turnip @elementalturnip.bsky.social · 6h

It's a bit like Andor in that regard. Andor doesn't really concern itself with the wider lore of the Star Wars universe too much, and that works to its benefit. Same thing here. They were never gonna intoduce Parallax or Larfleeze. This show isn't meant for that.

Turnip @elementalturnip.bsky.social · 6h

Lanterns is a great example of a very well written show that is completely at odds with the fandom of the IP it's based on. It's a show about grief, trauma, fear, and humility. Trying to tie in the Green Lantern Deep Lore would have been detrimental to the story being told here.

Forgotten Island Very fun movie! Two best friends get stuck on a magical island and have to piece together their lost memories to find their way home. It's a very fast-paced comedy, but does take the time for some more down-to-earth emotional beats. Also, the visuals are bonkers in a very good way.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire This could easily have been just more Hunger Games, but they have a decent enough reason for Katniss and Peeta to play the Games again, and we get to see the effect of Katniss' victory on both her (PTSD) and the population of Panem (starting a revolution). Good shit.

The Hunger Games I had sort of (unintentionally) avoided this series up until now but I'm glad I finally started it. I have some nitpicks (could do without the love triangle), but overall this is a very good first entry in a series that's getting more relevant with each passing day.

Sincerity is a precious resource The people providing it are just as valuable It would be far better to leave the world behind having reinforced the values you lived by and actually standing for something, than to spend your life painting over everything meaningful with irony and indifference.

NV is really, really good, but I wouldn't say it shaped my tastes or interests in the same way as any of the games I did put on there. I also know that by praising NV here I am still playing into the trans girl stereotypes. Which, y'know. Fair.

I think there's a fear to being seen as a larper due to how gatekeep-y some fandoms can be. And yeah, every fandom is gonna have those kinds of people, but every fandom is also full of people who welcome new fans with open arms.

Turnip @elementalturnip.bsky.social · 13/09/2026

I saw someone say that Ravenous looks cool but they aren't a Metroid fan so they're scared of "larping" as a fan. Listen. I am grabbing you by the shoulders. I wasn't a Sonic fan until Mania came out. I didn't get into Kingdom Hearts until *after* ReMind released. Don't be afraid to try new things.

Coyote vs. Acme What. A. Movie. It's a scathing look at how corporations manage to get away with anything, it's absurd in a way that only the Looney Tunes can pull off, it hits all the right emotions. If you told me I was gonna cry at a cartoon bird saying "beep beep", I wouldn't have believed you.

X-Men (2000) I knew going into this that it was gonna be a bit cheesy compared to later superhero films, but it kinda works for this movie. I'm not a huge fan of how the women in this movie were written. That being said, the relationship between Charles and Erik was perfect right from the start.

100

Turnip @elementalturnip.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Thunderbolts* I did not expect to like this movie as much as I did. It's a movie about depression, despair, grief, loss, and ultimately overcoming those emotions to become the best person you can. The characters all have really fun chemistry and make this B-Team take on the Avengers really work.

X-Men '97 Season 2 While I think I prefer the first season, this was yet another W from Marvel Animation. This season touches on the classic X-Men themes like discrimination and found family, but also touches on things like what it means to fulfill one's destiny. Looking forward to more.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Season 1) Damn, what an excellent show. I'm kicking myself for not watching it sooner. This show is full of wit and charm, the characters are all brilliantly written, the performances are all outstanding. This season has a satisfying end but I can't wait to see more.

Practical Magic It's a fun movie, but it kinda feels like parts of it were either rushed or left on the cutting room floor. It's definitely a movie of its time. I do like how casual some of the magic feels compared to the big, nature-defying spell that really kicks off the plot.
