I’m sick of these articles. He didn’t just kill Pierre, he’s responsible for killing millions and destroying lives. I hope it haunts him for the rest of his days.

This was a takeaway during the MeToo movement with a lot of guys that I knew. Really stung and was a difficult pill to swallow. Now I'm always a little wary.

This makes me ill and after being in tech for almost 20 years and being around sexism enough, this is just...very disheartening? I was never on the west coast but this seems newly horrific in a way I haven't heard of before

I mean, as a woman, it seems that driving women out of the industry who don't want to do this might be the goal?

I have only listened to the new songs once but Cleveland struck me as a song she wrote for him because he loves Cleveland and she was trying to celebrate that, and not really about how she herself felt about Cleveland? I thought it was sweet but I could have misheard it.

I had a cat that would, upon site of any door to the outside, would dart for it and on the rare occasion made it, froze in terror within a 10 to 20 ft range of the door (lucky for me---made it very easy to bring her in). I'm convinced they don't realize what they're doing lol

I'm curious, I know MFA is vulnerable to really advanced AI attacks depending how it's implemented, but I would be curious to know how the accounts being hacked are provisioned/secured

Loss of business, not just fines IMO, is a bigger hammer and one I'm worried about when it comes to international regs but the U.S.? Pfft. I do not have long term faith at all.
000
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
These companies are not doing anything unless the regulators tell them they have to & then they're doing it in a very narrow scope. I work for one. And while many are ringing that bell, there are still factions that don't want to listen to them and it makes our work very difficult. Time will tell.

jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This is not the 80s and we are not in the time. Call me cynical but as someone who was 23 in 2008 and watched all that shit go down with the banks and have watched these tech companies grow into enormous juggernauts, I have little faith they'll face any meaningful penalties that will slow them down
000
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
For companies like Google and Palantir, they are. Or else they would not be as cavalier as they have been.
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Yes. And what I am saying, and what a lot of other people have been saying, is that the CFAA is insufficient and there need to be actual tech regulations for companies to do the bare minimum in their due diligence to make sure they're not creating bad tech.
000
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
If a law is in place and on the books, and I'm consciously ignoring it because I don't want to pay to enforce it, and something happens because I wasn't correctly implementing those requirements (say, secure SDLC/ validation & test requirements), how am I not being criminally negligent?
000
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
And open negligence, knowingly breaking the law, like say owning a banned breed, if the dog gets out & mauls someone, would not be considered mens rea? Knowing you own a dog you're not supposed to & violating leash laws, isn't indicative of a mental state in which they know they're breaking the law?
000
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This is why more tech regs should be in place in terms of what these companies need to be doing because there is nothing to require them to be following industry best anything when they build their stuff.
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Then they supplement it, they pay the difference. Smaller companies are gonna suffer it but these Google, or Palantir, who gives a shit?
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Well I've worked in tech GRC and security for almost 20 years and most times if you bring up doing things for the sake of doing things the "right" way with due diligence and making sure stuff is working the way it should, it gets handwaved away because they have cyber risk insurance for it
000
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Most companies have insurance to address that and will just pay the money instead of meaningfully addressing the problem
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
These are tools tho; these agents are being configured to execute in certain ways. If they execute in ways that are unexpected and harmful then the onus should be on the people who created the tools, these are not sentient beings.
110
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
But, IRT the AI question, tech regs in this country (the U.S.) are woefully inaccurate across the board; how can you hold a company liable to breaking a law on how they should be architecting their software, what is and isn't okay for it to do, when you don't have those laws in place?
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I mean we're not talking cyber crime here tho, this is about dog attacks
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I mean, a cursory google also shows that owners can be held criminally liable too, to different degrees, depending on the laws in that jurisdiction and what has occurred. if a dog has a history of being bitey & you don't keep them secure, I imagine that would demonstrate some degree of negligence?
100
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Okay? So liable.

Yeah I'm aware, I lived in Missouri for about 20 years. I'm very familiar with Josh Hawley fuckery and how he used his sister's address when he was running for Senate
021
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I'm pretty sure people can be held liable for their dog attacking people if the dog gets loose, is that not why leash laws exist?
290
jas @eldrmllnl485.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I do not understand why people talk about these things as if they're autonomous sentient beings and not technology tools that we configure to do stuff. Update and fix the software or decomm the environment. The way they're acting like there isn't a solution here is very confusing.

One of the Mechs and I ended up being roommates for a time and she would openly deride history bc it took place a long time ago, so it didn't matter. Very smart otherwise, just one of those things. Their class loads were heavy & tough, so I get it to a degree, but unfortunate all the same.

I was a Comms major in college, many many years ago lol, and I minored in History. My main social group consisted of a variety of Engineers because my bff was a Civ Eng. Most of them didn't take history classes, and thought those and other stuff like English or anthro/socio was useless.

My country music listening at this point consists of older country music, and more modern artists like Kacey Musgraves and Jason Isbell, and not whatever poppy version of country which imo the genre has become over the past 2 decades

I should also add that when the movie got to showing people burning Teslas and vandalizing dealerships, the theater of mostly older folks in Santa Monica started applauding. I think it is possible Trump and Musk turned libs over 50 into John Brown.

If we let the current crop of "AI" people stay in charge, we are not gonna make it; not because of "superintelligent AI," but because of what the MIT study terms "cognitive surrender": offloading and deterioration of critical skills. And it increasingly feels like that's exactly what they want.

They even made DoorDash apologize.
DoorDash on Instagram: We messed up.
Our mistakes meant some NYC Dashers were underpaid or paid late. That's unacceptable, and we're deeply sorry to the Dashers we let down.
We've reached a settlement with the City of New York, and we will make this right by paying every impacted Dasher the amounts they are owed.

A key point: you do need a theory of communication, alongside a theory of politics, to be an effective operator I think the centre and left struggle, generally, with "playing the game" - it's not enough to just have policy prescriptions you think will work

there are good and complicated reasons "quality of life" issues became the domain of the right, but the left's great failure since the '70s has been operating under the assumption that results matter less than righteous intent, despite arguing for a material politics
