Afrikaners were dirt poor, mainly farmers. Many had struggled during the Depression. Apartheid gave them AA-style elevation into the working, then middle classes. Many escaped shanties. The so-called refugees have been embittered since 1994, still seeing themselves as entitled and racially superior.
