Can be hard to balance dog needs with a wildlife garden, so I'm trying a halfnhalf lawn (V Welsh). Luckily both dogs are short so a small fence should work 🤞

#RecordOfTheWeek today is 100 years old, just like a certain Sir David Attenborough! Lathbury's Nomad Bee (Nomada lathburiana) was recorded in May 1926 by Howard Hallett on The Garth. (Below photo © Steven Murray, 2024.) Happy Birthday Sir David 🎈 #DavidAttenborough100 #Attenborough100

Nice to see my first tiny Oak Bush-cricket nymphs and Common Earwig wiglets yesterday in a wood in a very rural part of South Shrops. Cricket vanishingly unlikely to be M. meridionale in this location.
Oak Bush-cricket nymph. One of three seen, all from low vegetation beneath oak. I suppose they fall out of the trees, but maybe they just go downwards rather than upwards after hatching (eggs laid in bark of trunk). Second instar Common Earwig nymph (wiglet).

The highlight of today's butterfly transect was ... a cranefly! This is the fabulous Wasp-banded Comb-horn, Ctenophora flaveolata. I've been lucky enough to see this species several times over the years, and each one is equally stunning 😍

Gall of the week is caused by a cynipid wasp, either Diplolepis nervosa (spiked pea gall) or D. eglanteriae (smooth pea gall). Without spikes they cannot be separated as D. nervosa can occur without them. They are now recorded on iRecord and iNaturalist as D. eglanteriae agg.

There's a reason no one draws harvestmen. It has taken me all afternoon to ink out the legs. This is meant to be a first draft, the idea was to trace the final ink drawing using a light box to remove any errors & make minor adjustments. Really don't know if I can face doing it. 1st of 4 plates.
An A4 drawing pad with the beginnings of 7 species of harvestman roughly sketched out in pencil. Also a mechanical pencil and two erasers next to the drawing pad, to the right. An A4 drawing pad with 7 species of harvestman sketched out in pencil and three of them just being gone over with black ink. First attempts at drawing psyllids. These are odd looking bugs. Working from reference photos is OK if you have a good knowledge of the anatomy of what you are drawing. Psyllids are new to me so I really need a specimen as well to work out how they go together.

A basking Gorse Shieldbug, my first shieldbug of the year, seen during Wednesday's one day sunny spell. Back to relentless gloom again since!
A mainly green shieldbug, head uppermost, partly obscured by the spiky green plant in which it is sitting. Large areas of its wing-cases have a reddish hue, with a bluish strip on their outside edges. The yellow abdomen is mostly hidden by the wings but it edge is just visible outside the blue areas.
