Finally submitted my #PhD Thesis, just a week shy of the ten-year anniversary of my first leaving home to attend university. What an incredible ten years they have been. Huge thanks to my supervisory team and and everyone who supported me over the years to get to this stage. 🐸

Supervisor–studented so hard even the symposium schedule couldn’t keep us apart! Had a great time presenting my master’s research earlier this week at the #UCLxZSL200 research workshop, made all the better because I got to present back-to-back with @ektinsley.bsky.social 😊

Super proud of @stancaf.bsky.social and @shubhamsoni.bsky.social for having led this important Natural History study. Surely you have heard about arboreal 🐍, but did you ever imagine them to dive to hunt for tadpoles in treeholes?! You're welcome! 👉 doi.org/10.1002/ece3... @klivvvienna.bsky.social

Now Dr Galdikas?? This is truly a gutting time to be a wildlife scientist. What an incredible legacy she leaves behind. news.mongabay.com/2026/03/biru...

Birutė Galdikas, primatologist who spent a lifetime studying & defending orangutans, has died at 79
In the early 1970s, orangutans occupied an ambiguous place in science. They were known to exist, of course, but remained poorly understood, rarely observed, and difficult to study in the wild. Their f...

First-time Masters supervisor here whose MRes student starts their research project on Monday! 🐸 Would love to hear any tips for making the process as fun / valuable / pain-free as possible for both of us? I’ll take sensible, unhinged, or anything in between! 🫡 #AcademicSky

It was wonderful to present my work to colleagues at @zslscience.bsky.social at the recent ZSL Science and Conservation Conference! 🐸 Thanks to the organisers and the committee for the Promoting #EDI through Public Engagement Award. I will endeavour to continue this work in my role as an EDI Rep! 🌈🧠

It is validating to see these issues being discussed more widely. As someone hailing from such a background and engaging with #EDI at @zslscience.bsky.social, who are leading in this dialogue, it is often at the forefront of my mind. I think The Two Ronnies sketch rather subverts the point, though.

A very successful Adder Day 2025! The weather was almost too nice this year, the scaly fellas didn't hang around for long.

Hi! I’m El, a PhD student at ZSL and UCL working on understanding behaviour to inform conservation in an endangered amphibian species. I am question-driven, and my primary interests lie in sexual selection, mate choice, courtship behaviour, colour, and parental care. Let’s talk science! 🐸🦔🐦‍⬛🦗
A smattering of images showing El in her work roles past and present. As well as her research work in aggressive behaviour and mating success in crickets and in polyandry and anti predator behaviour in amphibians, El has worked in research assistant roles working on riverine birds and on hedgehogs. She has also spent time working in ecology as an assistant and freelance ecologist, where she conducted great crested newt, bat, dormouse, and reptile surveys, as well as ECoW work. She also engages in teaching roles in both high schools and university settings, and is active in pursuing public engagement and outreach opportunities to talk about her science and conservation generally. If you are interested in behaviour, ecology, evolution, or conservation, she would love to hear from you!

Images: El using highly conspicuous radio telemetry equipment in some long grass (top left), El rocking some orange high-vis with a hand full of of great crested newts (top right), El holding a hedgehog recently fitted with a GPS tag (bottom left), El delivering a public engagement activity and holding a microphone (bottom centre), and delivering a careers talk to aspiring wildlife professionals at London Zoo (bottom right).
