Dr. Jane was one of the best photographers we knew. Just look at some of her work here – do you see what we mean? (Yes, she even took that selfie!) When you head out for the Jane Goodall Hike for Hope this weekend, we want you to be inspired by Jane – and take some great shots just like she did.

Jane once said: "I want to make absolutely sure that everything I've worked for, all my life, will be able to carry on, even when I'm gone." With the Jane Goodall Hike for Hope, which takes place across Canada this weekend, you can make that happen. Photos: Thomas D. Mangelsen / Michael Nichols

One year ago, the world lost one of its strongest advocates. Dr. Jane Goodall spent years advocating for animal welfare, for community-led conservation, and for youth environmental leadership. She knew that each one of us had an important role to play, and she made sure that we knew that, too.

Dr. Jane often spoke about how young people were true leaders — and about how, when given the tools they need, they could change the world. We feel the same way. Photo: Michael Neugebauer / Atlanta Journal-Constitution / Phil Hines

Indigenous Peoples have stewarded these lands since time immemorial, and the knowledge systems that colonization tried to sever are the same ones that hold answers for challenges now. We need to understand that both reconciliation and decolonization are fundamental to protecting the environment.

"The travel industry, when it's done correctly and wisely, is a really good investment for the future of conservation and biodiversity." Dr. Jane said these words last year, when she spoke with G Adventures – and we felt this World Tourism Day was the right time to bring them back onto your feed.

Dr. Jane loved hikes. She loved when she got her "dog fix," and she often spoke about how "the best days of her life" were when she could spend hours out in the rainforest. We're one week away from the Jane Goodall Hike for Hope – are you signed up? Photos: Wiliam Waterway / National Geographic

Check out this new photo from Tchimpounga – it's Mozambique! You may also know her as ZZ. At the moment, she's the only gorilla at the Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga Sanctuary. And because today marks World Gorilla Day, we're celebrating this incredible individual. Photo: Fernando Turmo

Fact: Chimpanzees are not pets. When photos appear to be fun and cute – like when they show chimpanzees dressed in human clothes – they are dangerous, because they give people the impression they can interact with chimpanzees. And that isn't true. #ReportIt2EndIt #4EverWild Photo: Fernando Turmo

One of the most serious and fastest-growing kinds of organized crime in the world today is transnational environmental crime. Now, we have an opportunity before us to create change, to protect Canadian interests, and to build the better world that Dr. Jane knew was possible. Photo: Fernando Turmo

"There can never be world peace until we can learn to live in harmony with nature as well as with each other." Dr. Jane may have recorded this message for World Peace Day last year, but the words also ring true today.

Today, as we mark World Peace Day, we want to look back at one of the speeches Dr. Jane gave about peace at the United Nations. "I think it's more important than ever," she said, "that we have a vision of what it would be like to live in a peaceful world – the kind of world we all want."

Dr. Jane always knew what she wanted to say. She had her message, and not even this bird could knock her off track! "We have to do something about our unsustainable way of life," she said here – with some interruptions. We could not agree more with that, and we're here to help.

"Like Jane Goodall, I spent every moment I could outside." That was what Dr. Shoshannah Bryn Jones Square — an Assistant Professor in Literature, the Environment, and Climate Change at Mount Allison University — told us when we spoke about the Hike for Hope, which takes place October 3rd and 4th.

Termite season: Each year, from October to November, large amounts of termites emerge and fly in swarms. For the chimpanzees at Gombe, this time of year is familiar and exciting. Some of them, like Glitter here, work hard to capture the flying termites from the treetops. Photos: Kristen Mosher

We don't know who needs to hear this right now, but we think this kind of message needs to be heard more often: "Remember, if you don't reach your goal straight away, don’t give up! […] Even if it's not your original goal, it's perfectly okay if you change course."

"We all depend on the health of all." What does that mean? Just ask Dr. Jane, who recorded this message back in 2022: "Our human health is closely related to the health of the local environment and that of the wild and domestic animals who live there."

Just eight years old, Evelyn is one of the Hike for Hope's top fundraisers so far. She describes herself as "passionate about birds, animals, and the planet!" As for why she decided to take part in the Hike for Hope, that was easy: "I wanted to raise money for the animals."

Make sure you recycle your phones! When you do, you are helping protect critical habitat for chimpanzees. "There are hundreds and thousands of cellphones lying around," Dr. Jane said. "They have coltan in them. Colton is often illegally mined. It's leading to the destruction of the rainforests."

One year ago, Dr. Jane recorded this message. This was the last message she ever recorded with our team. She spoke about how protecting nature was "an essential part" of her life and her work – and how, with the Hike for Hope, people across Canada are now able to take part in this mission.

Dr. Jane often spoke about the "powerful, almost mystical, knowledge of beauty and eternity" that came from spending time outdoors. Our CEO, Bella Lam, would agree with that. And she would know, since she says that "being outdoors, doing anything in the open air, has always been part of my DNA."

Dr. Jane Goodall advocated for the humane treatment of animals, and spoke out against invasive experimentation – while supporting the development and use of alternatives to animal research. At the Jane Goodall Institute, we carry forward her legacy of compassion and advocacy for animals.

Many know that Jane loved dogs. But she also loved cats – and "Cats." She loved poems, and enjoyed "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," the work from T.S. Eliot that inspired the musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber. She was once able to meet the cast. But did you know that Jane also wrote poems?

Here are some outtakes from our archives! We hope you enjoy these fun shots of chimpanzees, from both Gombe and the Jane Goodall Institute's sanctuaries for rescued animals. They seem to be as curious – and as clumsy! – as us. And that makes sense, since they are our closest animal relatives.
