Deep Image of Grand Design Spiral Messier 100 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2pmGwcg
This deep image shows the grand design spiral galaxy Messier 100. Its prominent and well-defined spiral arms are ablaze with pink HII regions and bright blue supergiant stars. In the centre of the galaxy lies an area of intense star formation visible as a small bright ring surrounding the core. A large faint halo extends far beyond the bright spiral arms.
This magnificent galaxy is located in the constellation Coma Berenices, approximately 55 million light-years away from Earth. At 107,000 light-years in diameter it is one of the largest spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.
Close to Messier 100 lies two satellite galaxies; NGC 4322 to the northeast connected by a bridge of luminous matter, and to the east is NGC 4328. Further away to the southwest lies NGC 4312, an edge-on spiral galaxy with a bright central region and a dusty disk. Numerous other smaller galaxies are scattered across the field, many of which are ultra faint dwarf galaxies with no obvious structure.
In the deep background countless distant galaxies appear, many visibly reddened by the cosmological redshift.

On the 27th March 2023, while some of the image data was acquired, the dwarf planet Ceres (mag 6.9) crossed the field of view, passing slowly in front of Messier 100's outer reaches as viewed from our perspective.
Click here for another version of the image which includes Ceres.

The Lagoon Nebula in Infrared light - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/egmQmU
This infrared image of the Lagoon nebula contrasts heavily with traditional images taken in visible light. Such images primarily display the striking magenta colour from glowing Hydrogen gas, as well as large dark obscuring clouds of dust.

The infrared part of the spectrum penetrates these clouds better and reveals complex details and thousands of young stars that are otherwise completely invisible. These stars shine primarily in the infrared and appear as golden red in this image. Only a minority of these are visible in traditional optical images.

To create this image I used a special infrared filter. Effectively the band observed is 700-1100nm since the sillicon CCD chip is not responsive to wavelengths longer than that, and this band is called NIR (Near Infrared). One issue arising from this technique is that the NIR band does not have a colour as such, since it lies outside the visible light spectrum.
To create a colour image from the NIR data I have developed a colour stacking technique which has produced promising results so far.
I use the NIR filter together with G and B filters to create a colour composite. The resulting images are assigned to the different channels as NIR->Luminance, NIR->Red, G->Green and B->Blue.

Substituting the R channel with NIR nicely brings out the contrast between the nebula itself and all the young obscured stars that shine primarily in infrared. This colour image is then overlaid with the NIR frame used as luminousity....

A quick view of the Rosetta nebula - From Ángel López-Sánchez - flic.kr/p/2kLxJKy
I didn't want to miss getting a nice image of one of my all-time favourite nebulae, the Rosetta nebula, before it was too late in the season and moved into the west.

This image combines 15 x 60s exposures in each color channel, using broad-band filters B (blue), G (green) and R (red). I also tried to achieve natural colours (i.e. the colours we would see with our eyes).

The data were taken at 10:30pm, Sunday 15 March 2021, from Siding Spring Observatory (near Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia).

I used a ZWO ASI1600MM-Pro at -20C with the ZWO 2" BGR filters, my new 7x2" ZWO filter wheel, a Skywatcher Black Diamond 80mm with an Orion x0.8 focal reducer (effective focal length 480 mm, f/6). I used the ZWO ASIAir to control the camera, filter wheel, the mount (Skywatcher AZ-EQ6) and the guiding system (ASI120MM + Orion 50mm finderscope).

The data have been processed with SIRIL, then converted into TIF using Fits Liberator using a logarithmic stretch, and finally combined in Photoshop to get the colours and the final details. Darks, flats and biases were used.

I usually try to get at least 30-40 frames per filter, but as I said this was a compromise to get a nice colour shot of this nebula before it set, and hence I took 15 exposures per filter, and only 60 seconds each (and the highest gain in the camera, hence the noise that can be seen when zooming in). Otherwise I would have taken ~5 minute exposures with a lower gain and 40 of them.

In any case, I hope you li...

Hubble Servicing Missi#2570 - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/2cjpYNh
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of NASA's first space servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, we are sharing this gallery of images from all five of the Hubble servicing missions.

Astronauts serviced Hubble for the first time in December 1993. Including that trip, there have been five astronaut servicing missions to Hubble between 1993 and 2009.

How did astronauts repair and service the Hubble Space Telescope more than 300 miles above the surface of the Earth? Watch Hubble astronauts as they discuss servicing from the innovative Robotics Operations Center: bit.ly/2EiiNTP

STS103-726-081 (19-27 December 1999) --- The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) floats gracefully above the blue Earth after release from Discovery’s robot arm after a successful servicing mission. The event marks the fourth time in history that a Space Shuttle has released the great observatory. Those occasions were the initial release in 1990 and three subsequent servicing missions including STS-103.

The Big Bang left a permanent scare in the cosmic background, 5 billion light-years from Earth - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/R8o7w3
The events surrounding the Big Bang were so cataclysmic that they left an indelible imprint on the fabric of the cosmos. We can detect these scars today by observing the oldest light in the universe. As it was created nearly 14 billion years ago, this light — which exists now as weak microwave radiation and is thus named the cosmic microwave background (CMB) — permeates the entire cosmos, filling it with detectable photons.

The CMB can be used to probe the cosmos via something known as the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect, which was first observed over 30 years ago. We detect the CMB here on Earth when its constituent microwave photons travel to us through space. On their journey to us, they can pass through galaxy clusters that contain high-energy electrons. These electrons give the photons a tiny boost of energy. Detecting these boosted photons through our telescopes is challenging but important — they can help astronomers to understand some of the fundamental properties of the universe, such as the location and distribution of dense galaxy clusters.

The NASA/ESA (European Space Agency) Hubble Space Telescope observed one of most massive known galaxy clusters, RX J1347.5–1145, seen in this Picture of the Week, as part of the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). This observation of the cluster, 5 billion light-years from Earth, helped the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to study the cosmic microwave background using the th...
