One thing I miss so much about Mike Davis is his ability to balance attention to base and superstructure, explain the political economy without skimping on the finer whorls of ideology. It's a rare talent.

OK, if you were waiting to find out what kind of fox I am before you pre-ordered Relatability, wait no more. These generous blurbs (or blurps, as O'Hara called them) just posted and I am seriously verklempt. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...
A blurb from Jonathan Flatley of the University of Chicago reads: "This is a major book by a brilliant critic at the height of his powers. By way of a revelatory argument about the New York School poets and the importance of queer sharing to the aesthetic experiences they offer and promote, Glavey here develops a thrillingly original theory of oversharing and relatability. I know of no book that speaks so insightfully and movingly about how we read, teach, think and feel today." A second blurb, from Anna Kornblugh of the University of Illinois Chicago reads: "In Brian Glaey's charming and piercing readings, poetry is an aspiration to mutuality as much as it is a representation, and anything like the singularity of a queer poem flutters fortuitously towards the generality of utopian expanse. A smart and lovely book."A burb from Stephanie Burt at Harvard reads: "The academic world is full of hedgehogs and people with hammers, but Brian Glavey is a friendly fox. I learned a ton from this book and loved the process of learning." A second blurb, from Andrew Epstein at FSU, reads: "This brilliant book provides a crucial new paradigm for understanding the preoccupations of our age, tracing the contemporary compulsion to share, and overshare, back to an unexpected source: The New York School pets, who anticipated the relational logic of our social media age decades before it arrived. Brian Glavey turns 'relatability' itself--a concept often mocked or derided--into a rigorous, illuminating category of aesthetic experience, offer a bracing revisionary reading of queer theory along the way. Wonderfully written, witty, and refreshingly personal, with dazzling close readings and provocative insights on every page, this is a major book."

there are an absolute fuckload of American companies whose origin story is a variant on “immigrant salesman hooks up with Delaware sailor who has pickle industry ops expertise, plausibly” and it feels pretty good when they let you know they remember
A Community Proposition
It all started in the mid 1920s with Shickrey Baddour, a Lebanese immigrant from nearby Goldsboro, who saw opportunity in the wasted cucumber crops of area farmers. Baddour came up with the idea of buying the cucumbers, putting them in a brining tank and selling the brined cucumbers, or brine stock, to other pickle firms. Baddour enlisted the aid of George Moore, a sailor from Wilmington who had worked in a Castle Hayne pickle plant. The plan didn't work the way they had envisioned, however: they had no buyers for their product.
By January 1926, a new plan was put into place through the efforts of a group of local business people who formally established the Mt. Olive Pickle Company, Inc. to pack and sell its own pickles. Thirty-seven original shareholders put forward the capital to get the company started in what all viewed as a "community proposition." The board of directors hired

Alito’s standard for racial discrimination in the TPS ruling, that racism has to be the *sole* motivation to count as discriminatory, is so deranged that it could arguably cover neither Jim Crow nor slavery. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
This is a “color-blind” Constitution that the architects of Jim Crow could love. Many of the devices employed during segregation, such as poll taxes, grandfather clauses, and literacy tests, were superficially race-neutral. In fact, slavery itself could conceivably be race-neutral—after all, one does not need to be a racist to seek cheap labor for a profitable business!

IMHO, the Supreme Court is a *bigger* problem than Trump, and it should be the primary target for reform. Trump and Congress would both be very different under a law-abiding SCOTUS, which would have stopped government action clearly animated by racism and racially gerrymandered districts.

Beyond the obvious racist intent and effect of the recent VRA decision, it strikes me that it was also designed—in its timing and general obtuseness—to sow procedural and legal chaos, which Republicans will then point to as evidence of a compromised ("stolen") election, once they lose in November.

There is no clearer case for the necessity of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 than how quickly southern states moved to eliminate Black-majority districts and dilute Black power after SCOTUS eroded Section 2. SCOTUS’s reasoning was immediately disproven by reality.
