Bobby's dad was the former GM of the Padres, and the younger scouted Tony Gwynn, among several other Hall of Famers (Ozzie Smith, Randy Johnson). Really took the time to explain scouting to me - someone who would never be able to pay him back in any way.

Just learned of the passing of Bobby Fontaine Jr., the Angels' scouting director from 1987-99 and the Mariners from 2004-08, plus many many more. While he was with the Blue Jays, he would always take care to say hello to me and teach me something new any time we were at the same game.

Ausmus is perhaps capable of keeping the Astros contending, but I also think it would be a mistake to hire a GM whose mandate is simply "keep the Astros contending." If I'm Crane, I'm really hiring a systems builder. A president of baseball operations, whether or not I give him that title.

I think the manager of a baseball team is important in the exact same way that the manager of, say, a customer service department is important. People want it to be X's and O's, but it ain't; it's about translating organizational desires to the work force and providing motivation.
