More than just a great “making of a failure” doc, really a deeper meditation on art and failure and the risk of putting oneself out there.

Made 1 of the biggest parenting mistakes of my life trying to take my daughter to see this as her 1st movie in a theater, AND it was a screening that had like thunder and rain and stuff. HUGE mistake as the literal destruction of the world happens in the 1st 10 min & that’s how long we lasted. Hah.

USHER is feeling like maybe lesser Flanagan so far, but at the same time quite satisfying and I’ll absolutely rip through the whole thing. Carla Gugino just straight haunting fools is the highlight. And watching the absurdly entitled get comeuppance feels nice if fantastical.

I caught parts of this when my daughter was watching it and it seemed like cool gateway horror for this generation. She kept rolling hers eyes at me when I was like “that’s an Evil Dead homage”, or “that’s a poster for THE THING on the wall” and showing her my Blu-rays.

I’ll say this quietly… but I like it more than John Woo’s no dialog experiment. Even if John Woo is an untouchable king and one of my all timers.

I loved it but yeah… definitely a divisive one!

Recommendations for the best 4K tv specifically for movie nerds who want to watch 4K Blu-rays w ZERO motion smoothing? I’m looking for a tv that isn’t calibrated for sports/gaming, but for cinema. I’m looking for a tv that doesn’t have shitty software built in but that will play discs flawlessly.

I’ve seen most of Flanagan’s projects, but not all. I think he’s a genius and one of the most important voices in horror currently working. So I’m glad for the “reason” to finally catch up on this one. (Maybe Bly Manor will be next?!)

The Fall Of The House Of Usher (2023) Title Card

I saw the 1st 2 eps of Mike Flanagan’s CARRIE at #FantasticFest (they’re excellent). Then I saw the great doc BOORMAN & THE DEVIL abt the making of EXORCIST 2. Flanagan is a talking head in that doc. This has led me to finally start watching THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, which I missed when new!

#NEAGLY was solid. Good in terms of bingeable Dad action. Not on Reacher’s level per se but very much scratches the same itches. Liked the team she built up, hope it sticks for a 2nd season. ESP rad that it pitted Neagley against a cult bc… man, fuck cults.

THE SQUIRREL is a lovely Finnish utopian/dystopian comedy/drama in which a man in an anodyne and sterilized future city finds a real squirrel where no other animals exist. Plays out very naturally from there. Great reflections on nature & humanity. The sweetest film at #FantasticFest this year.

Deborah Ann Woll and Jeffrey Donavan headline a really strong cast. Practical gore effects are breathtaking. The script is intriguing and loaded with fascinating characters exploring generational consequences. Loved this one. Will hit Shudder soon.

THE CYCLE: Writer/Director Jordan Downey is an emerging major talent. His zero budget movie THE HEAD HUNTER was a calling card & THE CYCLE is his full blown arrival. A patient/engrossing police procedural transforms into practical horror breathing new life into a well-trodden genre. #FantasticFest

I do think this one would benefit a bunch from being tighter. I liked it, and it has some cool visuals and creepy moments and a solid story and emotional throughline. But trim that bad boy down maybe 15 minutes and it’s almost certainly stronger.
