NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about DAUGHTER OF REDWINTER by @edmcdonald.bsky.social. This Scottish-inspired adventure fantasy of grave-sight & grand ambition, wild magic & fierce resolve, is tremendously fun! Our drink is the Draoihn: whisky and apple and honey.

A bright red cocktail sits atop TRAITOR OF REDWINTER and WITCH QUEEN OF REDWINTER by Ed McDonald. They are flanked by a box containing a bottle of the Bowmore 12 yr scotch whisky and DAUGHTER OF REDWINTER by Ed McDonald.

New novel idea: BRONTE vs. SHELLEY The Bronte sisters discover that Mary Shelley has created a book that combines key elements of all of their novels, and Bramwell did the cover. Shelley becomes outraged that everyone keeps calling it "Mary Shelley" instead of "Mary Shelley's Book."

@edmcdonald.bsky.social’s Misery in Blackwing is brilliant. The lore that lead to it, the creatures that came from it and live in it are so damned disturbing. Close second to @mytholder.bsky.social’s The Gutter Prayer. The (literal) depth of the city and what lived in it… shudder. Fantastic.

If you watch a video of people doing un-armoured, non-protected sword-fighting and make comments like "This is bullshit, you are going too slow," please go ahead and do it your way. I promise we won't have to see more of your comments for long.

I stayed up far too late last night finishing Traitor of Redwinter by @edmcdonald.bsky.social but it was too bloody gripping to put down. Brilliant series! Can’t wait to get my hands on Witch Queen of Redwinter.

Pro DM tip: The riddles you don't need answers for riddles you give your players! Coming up with an answer that fits is *their* job! "It sits, it bites, it never paints weevils, it foresees great evils. What is it?"

KING ARTHUR (2004) with Keira Knightley and Clive Owen is actually fairly fun, if generally forgettable, but there's one awesome line delivered by Stellan Skarsgård. "Finally, a man worth killing." Even if they do make him look like a 70s hair metal singer.

SKELETON CREW is a great addition to the Star Wars universe. An array of great characters and a fun story that takes me back to childhood.

Was going to say similar - If you are raised with religion, you are taught from an early age to put faith in whatever you are told emphatically, but to cherry pick the bits that justify what matters to you, ignore the parts you don't understand and mind-blank evidence that proves it wrong.

The main issue that fledgling authors have in trying to write Grimdark is that they forget the humour. A key element of Grimdark fantasy is a dark, ironic, politically aware gallows humour. The resignation to corruption, the nihilism and the violence need a counterweight, and that's making us laugh.

I didn't really intend to make the Redwinter books as queer as they ended up, the characters just came out as they did and all the straights kept getting killed. Kinda proud how it ended up 🏳️‍🌈 #bifantasy #lgbt #queerbooks #bivisibility #grimdark #fantasy #epicfantasy

"Transformers: The Last Knight" is an utterly unbelievable, absurdly unrealistic movie. There's a high-speed chase right through the CENTRAL LONDON congestion zone. Good luck getting above 20 mph, robots.

I really hope, and I think this may be the case, that World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery is effectively a testing ground for a new, start-from-scratch MMORPG that retains the classes from WoW.

Currently reading @edmcdonald.bsky.social's Daughter of Redwinter. LOVED Raven's Mark, and this is promising to be more great stuff. Side note: I'm incredibly envious of how this looks so effortless when I know what goes into a novel.

Thanks Clayton! DORW is a complete rewrite (every word) of a 280k word trunk novel I finished in 2014, and some of the ideas were in the pipeline since 2003!
