Ted not pulling his punches in the @thetransferflow.bsky.social newsletter today. Can't say we've seen enough to defend the new boss. #nufc

It's rarely a 3-1-6 from what I've seen, they normally have one or two players dropping closer to that back three to create passing options and making it more difficult to press

I'm hoping something starts to click in attack, because it has been too easy to keep us at arms length generally. Villa were pretty comfortable overall and it only really felt like we started created anything when the team started to cross (which isn't part of the managers playbook) #NUFC

Same in defence too. Clear shots conceded jumping up so high is a a mega worry and a clear reflection of the gap between press/defence that teams are accessing too often. Similar story on set pieces in defence too. #NUFC

When we compare the first 7 this season 🔴 with the last 7 last season 🔵 we can see some *winces* differences. Attacking radar below. Genuinely think it's inexcusable for Set Piece xG for to drop off so far in a league that demands every edge be respected. #NUFC

It's moved in the right direction ove rthe past few weeks, but #NUFC being this low down on xG difference ain't a good thing.

On my way up to NCL for the match, gonna be nice to see some pals that I’ve not had much chance to see for the past two years. Matchdays also now include a visit to see my stepdad (the reason I support #nufc ) whose health has quickly gone downhill & is largely non-verbal now. HWTL.

I’m waiting for a full 10 game sample of league data before yapping too much about Jaissle’s #nufc team. But the underlying numbers are … not good… the hope is it’s just young manager/team adapting, the reality is looking a little different right now.

Decent video this time. I Guess this is now the alternate version that will get used on Originals Adidas kits. Actually don't mind the Chess piece as a short hand for #nufc. Whatever my own thoughts about the need for this, I appreciate that Hopkinson is actually making & not punting decisions

In what will come as a surprise to absolutely no one, I’m a massive coffee wanker (you can swap coffee for stats should you want to). In a coffee shop called Poquito in Bristol & the batch brew is incredible. Clifton roasters Finca Las Flores, tastes like banana bread. Best I’ve had in a while.

The cost is that #NUFC rarely cross the ball - which is probably optimum as crossing can be a very inefficient style of attacking. If teams start encouraging #NUFC to cross instead of allowing the gaps between full backs/centre backs to open up, what we do will be interesting to see.

And in theory gives you more bodies centrally to deal with counterattacks (see Hall & Tino here) though we're a bit lightweight physically in central midfield atm and haven't managed to camp in the opposition half anywhere near enough yet #NUFC

Then triggering an underlapping run from either role, into the hopefully created space. Sometimes it gets a bit too congested... #NUFC

But this rotation seems a feature of the managers preferred style with full back, winger and even the striker taking turns at widening the gaps between the full back and centre backs. #NUFC

But we've also saw the reverse in the same match with Barnes/Hall 🔽 #NUFC

Kev Lawson @editkev.football · 22/09/2026
What you'd typically expect is that the full back would always be to the outside of an inverted winger to take advantage of the space on the wing... but it's not that simple at Jaissle's NUFC. We also see the Full Backs coming inside to receive the ball in this space with the winger wide #NUFC

Into space centrally as we saw at the weekend vs. Hull. Note - MFP's position pulling left here too, which also happened a fair bit vs. Hull but might just be a match specific thing. #NUFC

When we've had the opportunity to establish possession, at times our wingers have been narrow and drop to create a passing lane to connect with either an overlapping fullback As we saw from Barnes vs. Spurs #NUFC or...

It's happening a bit too early and eliminating central passing options. Either we have to be less aggressive with full backs positions or ask Hornicek to play in possession role between CB's until possession is established. #NUFC

Kev Lawson @editkev.football · 15/09/2026
Some real issues with #NUFC 's buildup play (if you can call it that atm), is how quickly we the 6 is dropping between the centrebacks and then the distance on the pass that follows has to be long or funneled wide.

I'm moderately worried about the amount of shots we're taking vs. allowing, even in a small sample & an outlier game like Liverpool at home (27 shots against). Lack of repeatable, attacking patterns especially in buildup, is a bit of a double whammy as we give up shots when we give the ball away

Re: Crosses, this wasn't a tonight observation (we actually crossed a little more tonight), but through 3 games in the league, we are dead last for crosses. That's not necessarily a problem, but it is a feature of the managers style #NUFC

Kev Lawson @editkev.football · 08/09/2026
It's accurate; we're hitting just 4 per 90 through 3 games in the EPL. Hit a few more as the match wore on today

Big fan of this from Ramsey who I think will work his way into the starting line up at some point this season. I’d love to see him in the 10 at some point, Willock is a more powerful runner but JJ is better at pretty much everything else. #nufc

At SFO waiting for my flight home to signal the end of a two year stint in California. Been a crazy fun adventure. Looking forward to being back in Newcastle very soon. Hopefully the 4:30am wake up is the last I have to do for a match for a while.

Looks like Willock is set to stay. I'm sure this will piss a lot of folk off, but given how much of the squad has changed this summer, some continuity moves are probably okay. #NUFC

Newcastle signing my #1 replacement for Anthony Gordon from my summer transfer window newsletter is very cool. Pardo is super versatile and can play across the front line, a great fit for Jaissle-ball #NUFC

Comparison here of Nico vs. Tonali last season. Better ball security and ability to get away from pressure from Nico but Tonali's engine a bit more explosive with way more sprints. Nico more of a high speed cruiser than sprinter. #NUFC
