As we recall the trauma caused by COVID in 2020, we should not forget COVID continues to harm. Many still suffer from Long COVID, people who mask are often harassed, and we haven’t scaled clean air infrastructure. If we truly acknowledge past harms, we should be working to create a better future.

Extreme wildfire smoke hits US and Canada. Here's our tiny California wildfire smoke org's advice from 9 years of watching and responding. (slides 1-4 of 8) #wildfiresmoke #canadawildfires #airquality #NewYork #Chicago #Toronto
Mask Oakland on Crisis:
US + Canada Wildfire Smoke
JULY 16, 2026

During West Coast Wildfires since 2017, Mask Oakland has distributed over 500k N95 and KN95 masks to vulnerable communities in the Bay Area and beyond. The current smoke levels in many Northeast US cities have passed 400 AQI (below 50 is normal), reaching hazardous, catastrophic levels. Even through major wildfire seasons, most have never experienced 400+ AQI, except if they were living down the road from a major wildfire. This is likely the worst smoke event in North American History in terms of severity and population affected.

Most people and governments are under-informed on how dangerous this is. You may want to help. Here is some advice.
@maskoakland 1 of 8, July 2026N95 Masking helps protect against smoke,
staying inside helps, air purifiers help

AQI 150 is unhealthy, you should wear the best mask you can when outdoors.

Which mask? P100 > N95, KN95 > Surgical Mask > Cloth > No mask

Wildfire smoke negatively effects everyone, even if you consider yourself healthy or that it doesn’t bother you much. It is full of toxic junk, including PM 2.5, tiny particles so small your lungs cannot filter them. Those particles then enter your blood stream and essentially scratch up your circulatory system and your organs.

It is very unlikely to be lethal in small or moderate exposure, but each exposure very slightly reduces your long-term lifespan and quality of life. Over time this can add up to significant impact. Hospitalizations do increase during wildfire smoke events. Check on people you know with respiratory challenges.

Indoor air quality is better than outside, during wildfire crisis, but is not perfectly safe. Close windows, use air purifiers, and mask if you sense levels rising indoors.

Driving is an exposure risk, web search the model of your car and see if it has a cabin air filter, older cars may not. After going outside in smoke, change your clothes and shower, and bag up your dirty clothes.

@maskoakland 2 of 8, July 2026Track the smoke / AQI levels in your area.

Levels can change quickly and you want to be informed

Media recommends airnow.gov, but it updates using longer and wider averages versus the below which focus more on individual sensors that update every few minutes.

We recommend these apps:
       IQ Air / AirVisual
WatchDuty, and PurpleAir.

But also take breaks from monitoring, or delegate one person in your family or circle or organization to monitor to reduce fatigue from constant tracking.

@maskaoakland 3 of 8 July 2026For very high AQI (300+), start combining strategies, just masking is not enough

The worse it gets the more important it is to combine smoke mitigation strategies. At the highest levels: Masking + Indoors + Air Purifiers + Windows Closed + Reduced exertion.

Every 50-100 AQI above demands new level of response, by 400+, 500+, 600+ we are talking catastrophic levels where even the percentage that gets through your masks filter is not a healthy amount to be taking in.

We’ve helped community members on the frontlines of fires, and when the air is at 600 for an extended period, they end up with significant cognitive impacts, even when huddled on the ground next to their air purifier and wearing a mask as much as they can tolerate.

If you monitor air quality and see somewhere you can drive to that’s below 50, and you are in say, 500, it would offer significant health benefits to even temporarily travel to a “green” air quality area.

Masking can be fun! We've found that reactions to masking can be less hostile when you wear a mask chain, and it can help you feel more confident and cool. This is why we're introducing our ✨Mask Charm Box✨ Find it in @lighthousebks.bsky.social next to the regular mask box!
Graphic titled "Mask Box Upgrade: Mask Charms are here!" on a blue to pink gradient background. Underneath in a frame is a photo of someone wearing a grey bifold mask. A phone charm dangles from each elastic, one with pink, white and blue hearts on a green string, and the other purple on a yellow string. Our Mask Box has been restocked with earloop and headband options for both bifold and trifold masks, and we have an exciting new addition.
Below is a picture of a plastic box filled with phone charms in lots of colours, and little rainbow and heart pendants. More text underneath reads: Our new Charm Box has phone charms that can be clipped to your mask elastic, with a decoration looped around the bottomA picture of another grey bifold mask, this time with a rainbow charm added. Text next to it reads: Find the box next to the mask box - please keep it tidy and closed after use! We currently have hearts and rainbows, but let us know when it runs low, and what other charms you would like to see!
Whether you’re feeling self-conscious about masking, want some extra bling at Pride without compromising your intersectional approach to social justice, or just to be a little extra fashionable in your daily life, grab one and wait for the compliments to roll in!

Can’t make it that day? We may be able to build a box for you to pick up another timeWhat is a Corsi-Rosenthal Box?
A CR Box is an air purifier designed to be constructable at home with easily accessible materials. They can work as well as a commercial air purifier at a lower initial cost. They usually use a box fan to drive air through attached filter panels.
Our kits make boxes that are roughly 52x52x70cm, but are quite light.
A picture of a finished box at the bottom, with filters on its sides and a fan lying on top.Who is this workshop for?
We want to prioritise getting these purifiers to community projects and organisations that can’t afford to buy a full price one.
But we’re also open to individual requests, or ones from local businesses that want to improve their indoor air! If you’re at all interested, please fill out the interest form linked in our bio.Is a CR Box right for me?
A single CR Box on a high fan setting can clean a medium room, like an office, meeting room or small business, very efficiently, and can still make a difference in a larger room.
The filters will catch pollen and dust very well, and also help with smaller particles like viruses and smoke.
The filters last for at least one year of daily use, and we can help with replacements.

In response to a question from @ZackPolanski.bsky.social on #LongCovid @DrAmirKhanGP.bsky.social says “I feel really helpless when I see them.” People who were healthy just a few years ago, a lot of them have lost their independence & ability to earn and there’s nothing in place to look after them.

A strategy I am recommending to people who don’t want to mask all the time is always in healthcare facilities and public transportation, AND if you see someone in a mask, put yours on. The first helps protect spaces high risk people may have no choice but to go, the second shows them support.

More Covid good news, as infection levels fall to their lowest level since 2021. For the first time, we have reduced the risk level to Moderate, with 1 in every 638 people in England infected. (1/3) buds.org.uk/covid-19-ris...

A classic anti-masker tactic is to claim that if you don't wear a mask 100% of the time, it isn't worth it. Untrue. Every single time you wear a mask, you reduce the chances for viruses to spread. Wearing a mask always improves public health, even if you only do it occasionally.

“I don’t want to wear a mask all the time” Alright. Would you please wear it sometimes? Sometimes > never. Like just keep one in your bag, and put it on when you’re in an extra crowded place maybe?

🚨 The most effective way to protect your family from measles is to make sure you’re all up to date with your MMRV vaccinations. Measles is a highly contagious illness that can make children seriously unwell. I urge all Londoners to check whether you or your children need to be vaccinated.
