I'm so very sad to hear of the death of Esther Ranzen who played an important role in reuniting me with Nicky Winton - the man who saved my life. It's so desperately sad that she couldn't choose assisted dying as was her wish.

New cartoon: The RNLI
Cartoon titled “The RNLI: Some of the people they help,” showing six scenarios involving people rescued by the RNLI. Including a man caught by the tide, a YouTuber swimming without preparation, a middle-lane driver, a neighbour with different political opinions, a superyacht owner who forgot to refuel, and people crossing the Channel in a small boat. The final caption reads, “All human beings – all deserve saving.”

If you feel like donating to the RNLI, here’s a link. I just have. Their minimum donation is £2: I think it might be nice for them to receive a lot of donations this week, even if they’re mostly very modest. Just so they know a lot of people out here appreciate their work. rnli.org/support-us/g...

I just think that risking your life at a moment's notice to save people you've never met in exchange for no money is a better expression of patriotism than dressing up like a Poundshop paramilitary and intimidating families with kids trying to get onto a ferry.

I agree that makes sense Sadly it will probably make them economically unviable for many people, as the potential mass adoption made them far cheaper than comparable disability specific tech But it's probably where we need to end up

My only concern is for the very many people living with sight loss who benefit from this technology to help them to navigate the world It would be a shame to throw that away because of misuse by some

Like this from @timharford.ft.com on how inclusive design principles can often help all users, not those just seen as traditionally excluded www.ft.com/content/4d8e...
Subtitles help people who can't hear what the actors are saying - and it turns out that, for some gritty dramas, that is all of us. Web pages that are designed with screen readers for the blind in mind are typically better structured, simpler and friendlier for mobile devices. The Oxo kitchen appliance company was founded by a retired cookware entrepreneur whose wife had arthritis, but the chunky rubber handles are far more widely enjoyed. And of course, the dropped kerb may be life-changing for wheelchair users but it is pretty convenient for anyone pushing a pram.
The challenges faced by users who are unusually small, large, old or young, or who have disabilities, are, writes Epstein, "more extreme versions of the challenges that
many other users face"

Based in the UK and have something like this in our bedroom Super simple to install - just plugs into a wall socket and needs two vent holes through the wall - and fairly affordable Huge quality of life improvement for heatwaves When I mention it friends look at me like I'm from another planet

Completely agree with this When building new tools which rely on AI models it's remarkably easy to just switch to a new model, including from a different provider Switching to a new database takes years, switching to a new model takes moments
