Damp, mossy, bryophite festooned rainforests cling on arund the western side of Britain. Wistmans Wood on Dartmoor best known but there are more fragments dotted about. @guyshrubsole.bsky.social is a passionate advocate, he foregrounds others who seek to defend and regenerate. Beautiful and poetic.

Like everything Laura Mucha does, this is beautiful and very clever. Yes, it looks like another large format picture book about scary wildlife and, yes, it is in fact that. However, it's also a book that considers fear and our response to fear. Come for the animals, stay for the breathing lessons.

Islands of Abandonment - from kings in Fife, to Pripyat, to an island inhabited by feral cattle, to post industrial america, to an overgrown research station in Tanzania @calflyn.bsky.social visits and deeply considers places where man has been, gone and left a mark. Profoundly, surprisingly moving.

🧵 Absolutely bloody brilliant books I have read recently. @coralrumble.bsky.social is best known as a poet. This is prose and tells the story of a boy whose father is absent, presumed dead, but whose story - like the stories of the drowned sailors who his class are investigating, won't stay buried.

This is excellent. Poet @coralrumble.bsky.social 's first fully prose novel. A story that is quiet on the surface but powerful underneath. Set very near to me - a lovely surprise! With themes that should draw in any reader who is learning to differentiate their own identity from their family.

I saw how much money, resources and hard work went into supporting these baby oak trees on the moor and wondered if anything close to that amount of effort and ingenuity had gone into supporting those learners who find schools a hard or inappropriate place to be.
