Lying in the sense that it doesn’t work or that it’s overambitious? The latter, right?

I’m not sure the govt will be in much of a position to offer incentives for CCS.

So, most CCS is actually for enhanced oil recovery. A lot of the skills needed for CCS are very similar to the extraction process. But that doesn’t mean CCS doesn’t work.

Exxon in its latest results said about using AI on subsurface data that this has provided “four new discovery opportunities above and beyond what we thought were opportunities. We’re optimistic there. Obviously, a lot more work to do to confirm those.” I think this was at Stabroek.

The problem seems like a logistics licensing question, rather than whether they are allowed to drill. When I spoke to them a couple of months (pre SPAC) ago they noted how long they had been in country and relations with govt.

The manifesto also talked about managing the North Sea in a way that did not jeopardise jobs. Given the continued job losses, I suspect this provides enough wriggle room for such a change. But at this point the equally important question is the judicial overview.

In what way was Nigeria a socialist economy? Most of her childhood in Nigeria would have been under Babangida, who did a lot of privatisation. And in terms of state control of oil, has someone told Shell, Chevron, Exxon? NNPC has stakes, but other countries have much more controlling NOCs.

I’m not sure it’s brutal? But it’s the comparison with solar power that is quite baffling. These things are doing different things! If anything, saying people underestimate solar so therefore CCS is overestimated seems like an odd leap.

Is it from Ed Kashi’s book? I think I heard him talking about it around 2009-10? Although that gets no closer to the question of whether the flare is stil being used

That seems the opposite of what I tortured out of Fuel Finder (admittedly via Copilot). It's conclusion was that SG14 is less variable than CM20 but "SG12 shows ~2×–2.5× the typical within-area spread compared with CM20".

Do you model the impact of changing prices for solar power, particularly with China cutting subsidies?

I imagine the govt looks at how the EPL has deterred investment in oil and is terrified about how it might spook the power guys - it needs a big AR8 and interest rates may be a challenge.

Move from the EPL to the OGPM now and - given DESNZ sees no particular benefit from the North Sea - move oversight to DTI. Provides a needed boost to Aberdeen and allows DESNZ to focus on its core mission.

Not a goldmine, no. But there’s a big difference between managing a declining industry and accelerating that decline - and laying a major decommissioning landmine for the future.

50 years ago today, Carlos the Jackal stormed OPEC headquarters in Vienna. The attack and hostage taking was shocking. But more shocking was the response. No country really wanted to pursue Carlos and it would take another 22 years before he was sentenced to prison.

The problem with much of the centrist commentariat swinging behind the "Britain is broken" idea is not only that the right are weaponizing it to sell their xenophobic/racist narratives, it's also that despair itself has social consequence. Britain is great! It is also in need of public investment.
