NYC's next mayor is an ecosocialist 🌱 From stopping new smokestacks in Astoria to winning public renewables and fighting Con Ed's rate hike, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social has led the fight for a #GreenNewYork from Day 1. Now it's time to build it. Join us. ecosocialists.nyc/join-us/
POLITICO headline:
Mamdani backs clean energy buildouts, decarbonization efforts

Subhead:
NYC's presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee is poised to take on big energy transition challenges in the nation's largest metropolis

Photo: Zohran speaking at rally outside of New York Power Authority's NYC hearing on public renewables“I’m running for mayor to make the city more affordable and to take on the existential crisis of our time — climate change,” Mamdani said during a March candidate forum on climate.

One of Mamdani’s signature legislative priorities — although he wasn’t the prime sponsor of the bill — was pushing for the New York Power Authority to build out new renewable generation. He’s one of only two lawmakers who actively participated in Con Edison’s last rate case and recently slammed the utility for seeking another bill hike. Mamdani also opposed a new gas plant in his district that was blocked by Gov. Kathy Hochul and sponsored an unsuccessful measure to ban new fossil fuel power plants.“At a time when we’re certainly seeing Republicans, but even some Democrats, backing away from climate change and a kind of Green New Deal style politics, this is a huge rebuke to that,” said Daniel Goulden, the strategy co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America’s Ecosocialist Working Group.

“Our horizons have expanded exponentially — and I’m really excited for the future for the first time, maybe, in my entire life,” they said.

Mamdani’s most detailed clean energy proposal on the campaign trail was to renovate and decarbonize 500 schools, transform 500 schoolyards into green spaces, and create 50 resilience hubs at schools.Mamdani supports the [Public Power NY] effort to get the power authority to move faster and build 15 gigawatts of renewables, including a third of that in the downstate region. The authority currently has plans to build 6 gigawatts, although many of those projects are in the early stages of vetting.

As mayor of New York City, Mamdani would have a significant platform to pressure the power authority and Gov. Kathy Hochul to do more to decarbonize the downstate grid. The region’s electricity mix is currently 89 percent fossil fuels.

He could also promote additional solar and storage on city properties if he ascends to City Hall, although there is already a local law setting targets for solar on city facilities.

Statement, DSA National Political Committee. End the Raids, Lift the Ban, Drop the Charges! DSA Stands with Immigrants. On 6/4/25, the Trump administration re-enacted a travel ban preventing nationals from 12 countries from entering the United States. Two days later, ICE began violent, military-style raids in Los Angeles, detaining over 100 Angelenos, including labor leader David Huerta, president of the SEIU California State Council. The fight for immigrant justice is a fight for the very survival of the working class—for our families, our communities, our neighbors, our union siblings, & for those people who haven’t yet won the protection of a union. The ICE raids in Los Angeles are meant as a show of brute fascist strength—but solidarity is a force more powerful than gravity. We call on DSA members to pour into the streets, organize & fight to defend our immigrant communities. We welcome you to join us, as the largest socialist organization in the US, in our struggle for a more dignified & just world for all.

How did a scrappy team of New Yorkers make public power a reality? And what’s next to actually get it built? Hear from @publicpowerny.bsky.social and @cplusc.bsky.social on the latest podcast with @volts.wtf, about New York's fight to #BuildPublicRenewables ⚡️
Volts podcast logo + episode title: What's going on with public power in New York?I think that cost and climate are often framed in opposition. But we were able to win because we exposed this as false or, at minimum, the product of specific policy choices. So, we said it's not cost versus climate or jobs versus climate. It's jobs because of climate, affordability because of climate. And we won on that.

And that was because of public ownership.I think that from the very beginning, there was this idea that we needed to change the political economy of renewable energy. It has to work for everyone if we're going to be able to do more.
...
We really have to use public institutions as a tool in the fight to grow renewable energy, because it's common sense.

If you have this resource, then we have to be using every tool in the toolbox. And we knew that we were fighting for something that was a pretty new idea. So it was important for us that this work for everyone, not just morally, because it's the right thing, but also politically. One of the takeaways there is like, these are political problems. At the end of the day, these are not merely technocratic problems, although they present technocratic problems as well. There are ways to do this.
...
I think that the beauty of public power is, it says okay in so many ways. We are already supporting these kinds of artificial markets through pools of money like RECs, and in other countries, you have contracts for difference and stuff like that. What we're saying is, we're already spending so much of this public money. The public deserves a voice if that's how it's going to be. We deserve a say in what our energy system looks like.

Today on Volts: if the market won't build clean energy fast enough, should the state step in? Advocates believe so, and they convinced the NY legislature, which passed a public-power law over a year ago. How's that law doing? And how's the larger public-power push? We get into it.
