Dedicating land to biofuel production has large implications for food security, nature and the climate. Meeting the 22% jet fuel target in 2040 with crop-based biofuels would require between 1.4M and 1.6M hectares of farmland, equivalent to 34-39% of the current area of arable crops in the UK!
Graphic showing land needed to meet the UK SAF Mandate target in 2040 by biofuel feedstock, compared to total area of arable crops in the UK.

100% = 4.1 million hectares in 2025

Soybean and wheat - 39%
Rapeseed and wheat - 35%
Energy crop (miscanthus) - 34%

Manitoba Eco-Network. University of Winnipeg. Environmental Law Centre. Community Workshops: Mining Law in Manitoba. We want to hear your opinions on the law, critical minerals, environmental protection, and public health: as related to the mining industry! This project examines how Manitoba can modernize the provincial laws that govern mining and critical minerals, to support a more environmentally responsible and socially-just future for the province. We want to hear from communities across Manitoba about their experiences, their ideas for law and policy reform, and help communities participate meaningfully in the governance of the mining sector. Event details: Scan the QR code or visit mbeconetwork.org to learn more! This work would not be possible without funding contributions provided by the Social Sciences Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRCC) Award 892-2026-0051, and the Manitoba Law Foundation.
