🐗 New paper on zoning for African swine fever mitigation Based on GPS data from 527 wild boar across 46 European study sites, we found buffer sizes of ~8 km likely sufficient around most infection foci, but buffers up to 20 km may be necessary to limit wild boar movement! 📄 doi.org/10.1111/1365...
Figure showing a map of the spatial distribution of the optimal size of the infectious buffer area across Europe for african swine fever. Colours represent the estimated optimal radius (in kilometres), defined as the value at which the 14-day risk of wild boar leaving is ≤0.05. Predictions are shown for a temperature of 11°C and a precipitation of 0.43 mm, which correspond to the median conditions across our data set. The resolution of the map is 100 m. Insets show zoomed-in views of the past ASF outbreaks in Belgium and the Czech Republic, with points indicating the locations of recorded cases. The same colour scale is used for the main map and inset panels. Darker blue areas indicate small buffer radii, red areas correspond to larger radii (in kilometres), and black red areas indicate radii exceeding 20 km.

When mothers make the winners: How alpha female lineages dominate hyena clans
In mammals, males are usually stronger and more competitive than females. Males also show greater inequality in reproductive success—the number of offspring they produce—than females.
